Scouters from a three county area will meet at the Production Credit Office in Stamford for the Northern District district committee meeting of the Chisholm Trail Council. A manpower recruiting program has added new members from Rule Hamlin Haskell Anson Stamford and Albany. District leaders include Joe Breed Rae Eastland Tom Barfield Weldon Johnson Alfred Liner Ernest Williams Dr T W Williams and Dick Rowland with Burr Russell serving as district commissioner.
The Church of the Nazarene in Stamford will dedicate its new brick veneer church on Ferguson Street at the corner of New Braunfels Sunday afternoon at 30 o clock with Rev. Raymond W. Hurn presiding and organizing the church. Rev. Russell Walborn led cottage prayer meetings after the building began and revival services run through next Sunday night led by evangelist Dan Perryman of Bossier City Louisiana. The church, reestablished after disbanding, has about 10 members with Sunday School averaging 11 to 12. the 50 by 50 foot building houses a 32 by 30 foot sanctuary four classrooms and an office on a half block purchased. The land and structure are valued at about 15 000.
Bobby Byrd of Avoca becomes a pledge in Saddle Tramps the Texas Tech men’s service group. The organization aims to foster school spirit and student involvement in Tech athletic events.
Trial of the City of Stamford versus C F Brownfield Jr in Jones County Court is scheduled for February 28. The city sues over payment of an assessment on property on Hudson Road and a similar suit against Lynn Inespie is pending.
City firemen had one run this week after a quiet start to the month. An overheated stove sparked a blaze at Benny Wyatt’s residence Saturday, with damage described as not great.
Stamford Jaycees will have first choice of office space when the remodeled city hall opens. The school tax office moves to the auditorium building, then C of C relocates to the city hall second floor, with other agencies reassigned. The council also orders settlement talks with A C Humphrey over water damage at the Kindell warehouse basement.
Stamford High School principal J W Simpson cites absenteeism and dropouts as the two biggest problems, noting state aid losses from unexcused absences and that only half of graduates go on to college. He outlines four year English and science offerings, driver education, athletics, and the Youth Center impact.
Stamford City Council voiced strong support Thursday for a street paving program modeled on Denton Texas. The plan uses assessments and partial city funding, with bonds estimated at 175000 to cover about 60000 feet of paving, and December voting on bonds to be reasked in a spring city election.
Postpone study of consolidating Stamford rural routes kept the plan from taking effect last Saturday. Route 1 would have been folded into Routes 2 and 3 to save about 3400 dollars yearly. vacancies on Route 2 and substitutions were noted. Assistant Postmaster General Frederick C. Belen said total mileage and time would fall below national averages and no difficulty in daily coverage was expected.
Stamford rancher and businessman Roy Arledge declared this week his run for state representative in the 3rd district. He filed with the Jones County Democratic chairman Monday and plans district tours this week. A former city council member and civic leader he will issue a formal statement outlining his platform later.
Mrs Mary Stremmel 77 died Saturday night at Hamlin Hospital after a four day illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p m in Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev Ernest Klug officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery under Kinney Funeral Home direction. Survivors include son Emil and two daughters Hilda and August Angerman, plus siblings and in laws. Pallbearers listed.
Stamford resident 83 dies in Pecan Grove Nursing Home Sweetwater after 42 years as secretary at St Johns Methodist Church. Survived by sister, two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at Patterson Chapel of Memories Sweetwater. interment in Sweetwater Cemetery.
Funeral services for A B Bert Foster were held at 2 30 pm in the First Methodist Church at Lueders He was found shot to death last Wednesday morning in Anson Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel under Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel Foster, longtime Lueders Refinery manager, born November 2 1924 in Merkel, served in the US Army 1943 45 in the Asiatic Pacific He married Jenonie Ruth McBride September 6 1946 in Abilene Survivors include his wife a daughter Brenda Rae 13 a son Rex his mother Mrs Clarence Foster of Merkel one brother Riley Foster of Midland and a sister Mrs Richard Craig of Midland
Four Stamford buildings may meet emergency fallout shelter standards after a survey by Abi lene engineering. To qualify a basement space for at least 50 people with 10 square feet per person is required, plus walls and roof blocking one twentieth of outside radiation. Boone and Pope conducted the survey with Stamford workers Harold Hatfield, Les Proce, William Early and James H. Wheeler Jr.
Mrs FitzGerald attends the American Red Cross mother baby course in Abilene at the Taylor County Chapter House from Monday to Friday. Miss Huelah Miles teaches the 30 hour program aimed at nurses to enable Red Cross instruction in schools and communities. Mrs FitzGerald is a Hendrick Hospital for Nurses graduate active in the Stamford PTA and Jones County School nurse.
The annual school census for ages 6 through 17 is nearing completion with a deadline of January 31, 1962. O M Isbell leads the effort and urges families with eligible children to submit census blanks or contact Stamford High School or Isbell after hours.
The annual poll tax supper will be held at Stamford Memorial Post 9179 VFW on Saturday night January 27. Members and their families are invited. Adult admission is a poll tax receipt for 1962. Jones County residents may pay poll tax at the VFW home that Saturday night.
A singing event is set for Sunday January 28 starting at 2 p.m. at Foursquare Church in Stamford. The public is invited to attend.
