Grassfire on SMS Ranch near Stamford contained with help
Stamford Fire Department and crews from Anson Hamlin and Aspermont fought a large grass fire about 10 miles west of Stamford and 6 miles southwest of Lager ton on the LMS Flattop Ranch. About 640 acres burned with no cattle losses and limited fence damage. A second fire on the Stovall place burned under 100 acres and was quelled as the first ones were tamed. Cause is under investigation.

Lions Club Pancake Supper Friday in Stamford
The Lions Club hosts its annual pancake supper Friday evening at the Lions Club Building on the east side of the square in Stamford. Stamford district extends superintendent's contract
The Stamford County Line Independent School District board extended Supt Don R Howard's contract to June 30 1978 in a Jan 15 meeting. Howard 38 is a Meadow native and 1960 McMurry College graduate with degrees and roles across Pecos Reynolds Stamford and area. He and wife Jerry Ann Baize have three children. Stamford Lueders and Avoca 4-H and FFA members excelled at the Jones County Livestock Show in Anson. Cary Stenholm won grand champion gilt and contributed a Poland China gilt title, with Doug Howard taking reserve grand gilt. Keith Clifton and Clyde Prince earned Hampshire gilt honors. Stenholm’s brother Chris claimed the market Poland China barrow, while John McLaughlin secured reserve Poland China barrow.
