Stamford youths shine at county stock show prizes

Wade Shurley, a Bricksdahl 4-H seventh grader, won grand champion gift and barrow and reserve grand champion barrow at Tri-Area Livestock Show then repeated strong showings at the Jones County Livestock Show. Stamford 4-H and FFA members, including Lisa Medford and Tammy Holbrooks, won grand and reserve broiler titles. Jeff Back, Lueders Avoca, claimed grand champion rabbit with a senior California back, while Maria Henning of Hawley earned reserve grand rabbit honors.

Nutrition Project Eyes Better Future in Stamford

The City of Stamford's Nutrition Project reports greater than expected success after nine months of operation, said Mary Stone, the director. The program aims to expand services and improve community health with continued support and planning.

Fire destroys residence east of Stamford on FM 142

An early Sunday fire destroyed the Kenneth Spitzer home on FM 142 at the east edge of Stamford. Fire Chief Bill Lawson said D and D Tong Service workers saw the blaze and reported it before eight studs were left standing. No occupants were home and cause could not be determined. A Kenny Spitzer Fire Relief Fund was set up at First National Bank in Stamford.

Gin manager named alternate Cotton Board member

Jack Young, manager of Farmers' Coop Gin in Stamford, has been appointed as an alternate Cotton Board member for a two year term ending December 31, 1981. He received his appointment letter from Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland. Young was due to attend meetings this week in Raleigh North Carolina and New York City New York.

Stamford County Line ISD forms school evaluation committee

A citizen advisory panel in Stamford County Line Independent School District launched a facilities and needs evaluation. Ed Ekdahl chairs a 40-member group from diverse backgrounds split into seven subcommittees. Three campuses Oliver Reynolds and high school will be visited January 15 to 22 with findings due January 23 and a public meeting January 28 to assess priorities before February 7 school board report.

48 year old Abilene resident Joe France Harrison will begin duties February 4 as manager of Stamford Chamber of Commerce. A native of Monday he works at ACCO Feeds in Abilene and has extensive civic ties including Anson city council Lions Club Masonic Lodge and Baptist church membership. He holds a BS from Northeast Louisiana State University and has 14 years military service.

Timber Town playground arrives for Oliver School students

Oliver School students will gain a Timber Town redwood playground with two spiral slides a straight slide a swinging bridge climbing ropes and a chain ladder funded from the Oliver Halloween Carnival funds and arriving around March 1. PTO president Annette Wilson notes donations from Kiwanis and Exchange clubs and calls for cement and sand contributions with volunteers needed for construction.

Smorgasbord Ticket Sale Opens for Bethel Lutheran Feast

Bethel Lutheran Church in the Ericksdahl area east of Stamford launches mail only ticket sales for the Swedish Smorgasbord dated February 22. Tickets cost 7 dollars with limited 10 per order, include four serving-time choices, and require a self addressed stamped envelope. Orders due February 1 with a drawing to determine buyers after the deadline.

Rock-A-Thon planned by St John’s United Methodist youth

The MYF group of St John’s United Methodist Church will sponsor a Rock A Thon on Saturday January 19 starting at 8 a.m. at Kinney’s Furniture Store on the square’s north side. Youths will rock until midnight to raise funds for the conference youth ministry fund and a ski trip with per hour pledges. Organizers hope for about a dozen participants.
