Native Boerne man named Jones County agriculture agent
Gary A. Stanford, a native of Boerne in Kendall County, was appointed Jones County agriculture Extension agent effective January 16. A Texas A&M graduate, he has led cotton and beef cattle programs, helped form the Green Belt Sheep Producers Association, and previously served in Hockley and Foard counties. He replaces Tommy Antilley, who resigned January 1. Stanford and his wife Sharon have two daughters.

Two Jones County commissioners, W. L. Moore of Precinct 1 and Don Doty of Precinct 3, announced this week that they will run again in the Democratic primary. Stamford school board member J. C. Riddle said it is too early to decide on a possible candidacy. A 46-year-old Abilene lawyer and former Stamford resident announced he will seek a six-year term on the 11th Court of Civil Appeals. Associate Justice Bob Dickenson, elected in 1978, remains in the two years of the unexpired term of retiring Justice Esco Walter.

Tri Area Livestock Show crowns multiple champions at Tri Area
The Tri Area Livestock Show showcased exhibitors from Lueders Avoca Hamlin and nearby areas with cooler yet comfortable weather. Wade Shurley earned grand champion gilt and grand champion barrow, while Jeff Back won grand and reserve grand in the rabbit show. County stock show draws 350 plus entries at Tri Area showbarn
More than 350 entries are expected Saturday at the Jones County Livestock Show with swine leading at over 180 entries including 113 barrows 72 gifts and sows and one boar. Rabbits total 67 followed by 50 cattle 6 steers one dairy heifer 18 commercial calves and 25 heifers. 42 pens of broilers plus 1 dairy goat four lambs six rams and 12 ewes make up the rest. Judging begins at 9 a.m. Poultry swine rabbits sheep and beef move through the rings with Tod Blankenship Richard Spencer John Schumacher serving as judges. Show superintendents are the same as last week. Trophies supplied by local livestock and community groups including Sam Baize Cattle Company Sellers Cattle Company Rolling Plains Production Credit Association and area clubs.

Two burglaries were reported to Stamford police Monday night. Joe Smith Upshaw home at 715 East Reynolds lost a tape player and receiver after entry through a back door between 6 15 and 9 p.m. Bailiff Grocery at 714 North Swenson suffered a front glass break between 10 and 10 30 p.m. Cigars four watches and medicine were taken. Mrs. Bob Bailiff offered a 300 reward for information leading to arrests.
