Stamford sits near the North boundary of Jones County in Central West Texas. Distances show it 168 miles west of Fort Worth and 45 miles north of Abilene. The city grew after 1900 with rail lines, was incorporated in 1901, and later expanded with Wichita Valley and Stamford Northwestern rails. The city covers 2,375 square miles, operates under a City Manager system, and has Warren B. Tayman as mayor in 1927 with Charles W. Zug Jr. as city manager.

Jubilee year marked for Missionary Society in Atlanta

The installation of officers is postponed and a Jubilee year celebration for the Women’s Missionary Society of the Southern Methodist Church begins in 1928. Since May 23, 1878, the group has reached fifty years of work, with St. John’s women invited to participate in observances throughout the year. Publicity Superintendent.

Stamford High School announces a schedule change as the Bulldogs travel to Breckenridge High Friday for a game originally set in Stamford. Breckenridge will return the game to Stamford on February 3 due to conflicts with local events.

Gas Company Plans Erection of $15 000 Home in Stamford

The Stamford and Western Gas Company will start construction within 30 to 60 days on a $15 000 permanent home in Stamford to house offices and serve as a base for its Central West Texas gas project. Line work began in November and should finish by June 1, with four hundred miles of pipe to supply natural gas to Stamford and 17 other towns, plus more soon. The move coincides with the company establishing its general offices here and has attracted eleven new families to the area.

Dallas man buys Mrs Hood's Stamford store in takeover

A Dallas businessman, Bailey, has purchased Mrs. E. O. Hood's store on the north side of the square. He plans a new chain of ladies ready to wear with a Wellington outlet and two more stores soon. A Friday sale will clear winter stock before renovations and spring merchandise arrive. Russell Williams to manage locally, with Miss Bobbie Alfred joining the sales staff.

Reeves Seeks Re election as District Clerk

J Spurgeon Reeves announced by telephone from Anson that he seeks reelection to the Jones County district clerk post. The incumbent cites a years long record of faithful and efficient service and promises continued diligence if voters return him. W B Malcolm of Dallas represented Ford interests in town last week.

Three living members of the Joe Sayers Camp of United Confederate Veterans visited the Stamford Rotary Club, sharing Civil War memories and experiences. Dr C C Shell spoke of a year in Fort Delaware, Rev Mr Morris described Andersonville guard duties, and Rev R A Stewart offered lessons from the war. Ray Rector led the program and new member R E F Latch was introduced.

Mias Bessie Abbott of Rule Dies in Stamford

Mias Bessie Abbott aged 18 of Rule died in Stamford last Saturday night and was buried at Rule Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Rule by Rev. Mr. Small. Funeral arrangements were directed by W N Kinney.

Body of Dennis Webb Returned for Burial in Texas

Dennis Webb 26 of Abilene Texas drowned with his wife when their car plunged from a fogged dock into Coos Bay near North Bend Oregon. Dennis body was found in the bay and due to search efforts his burial plans were arranged in Lueders or Abilene with funeral directions by Frank Webb and W O Kinney. Mrs Webb's body had not yet been recovered.

Poultry School and Show Attracts Large Attendance

John Dee died at his North Swansea avenue home Sunday evening after a yearlong illness. He came to Stamford fifteen years ago with his family and worked more than twenty years for the Wichita Valley railroad. Funeral services were held at the home, with burial in Gainville on Wednesday. Surviving are his wife and daughter Marie, and a sister in Missouri. Harrow Furniture Company arranged the funeral.

Owen Thomas Seeks Re-Election As County Judge

Owen Thomas, completing a second term as Jones County Judge, announces his candidacy for re-election from Stamford. He cites highway projects across the Leeders Stamford Hamlin district, noting central roads completed while northern work paused by Archer County district ruling. Stamford poultry show opens with 450 entries

Four hundred fifty birds entered by Wednesday afternoon as the Stamford poultry show and poultry school begin. The show will continue through Friday with classes in the school led by FB Lt. Tanner and experts from A and M College. Exhibition space hosts chickens ducks geese turkeys and eggs with prizes to be awarded Thursday morning. The Central West Texas Poultry Association met and hired a manager My Kenieon to coordinate cooperative marketing of poultry and eggs.

Cotton Receipts Soar At Stamford Yard In 1927 Crop

Receipts at the Stamford cotton yard reached 10 404 bales by last Saturday, with Joe R Jones the public weigher reporting the total for the 1927 crop may approach 11 000 bales.
