Dennis Webb and wife, formerly of Lueders, are missing believed drowned after their car plunged from a dock at North Bend Oregon. The vehicle was recovered but no bodies found as Mrs Kale Myatt of Nugent and others assist in the search. Dennis Webb, son of Frank Webb of Lueders, spent his boyhood there.
Sheriff Tom Hudson announces his candidacy for re-election to the Jones County sheriff’s office. He has served nearly twelve years as a peace officer, including four years as deputy and two terms as sheriff since 1924, and retains public respect and confidence.
Luella Hauk announces candidacy for re election to county superintendent of schools in Jones county. She is finishing a second term and cites improvements in rural schools and her extensive experience in Jones county education.
Mrs. Imma Shimmer celebrated her fifty ninth birthday last Thursday with red and green decorations and gifts. Refreshments served to a list of attendees including Mrs. Griggs, B. L. Thompson, J. E. Lawrence, Lee Davis, Frank Mitchell, M. V. McDonald, Vina McClestery, J. E. Sanders, A. E. McKay, Claudi Davis, Nina May Mottes, Opal Mitchell, Alma Lee Thompson, Roy Dean Thompson, Billie Thompson, plus out of town guests Mrs. I Rutherford, W A and Miss Hazel Rutherford of Rotana, and James Rutherford.
The Exchange Club met last Friday noon and elected officers for the term. O G Lewis was named president with Dr L F Metz as first vice president and Jack Husbands as second vice president. Co B Gray becomes secretary treasurer and Rev Fred S Rogers serves as horncopter. The club reflects on past year accomplishments and looks to bigger goals in 1928.
A double funeral was held in Lueders for G W Risley and the infant son of Mr and Mrs Willie Harndt. Risley, born January 1 1858 in Michigan, would have turned 70 this Sunday. He died Wednesday morning at his daughter Mrs Arthur Fitzgeralds home. He is survived by three daughters Mrs Arthur Fitzgerald Mrs John Scott and Mrs Winnie Arp and four sons Fred Roy Ward and Ernest Risley. Roy Risley was absent in California.
Stamford High School news reports a Thursday night basketball game as the Bull Dogs host the Monday quintet in the gym. The piece notes the upcoming end of the first term and efforts toward launching the school paper. Ernest Mac Elreath, Baylor freshman and former gridiron star, gave a chapel talk.
The McMurray College quartet will sing at St Johns Methodist church during the 11 o clock Sunday service. Dean McKeown will deliver an address on Christian education afterward replacing the pastor's sermon.
Fred W. Taylor announces his candidacy for public weigher in precinct 2 Stamford. He has lived in Jones county since 1908, relocated from Avoca, and promises a square deal if elected. Weekend guests in the Morrow home included Miss Marguerite Fisher Totsie Datson Russell Culp and Louis Reisen of Wichita Falls.
The West Texas Chamber of Commerce staff meeting and venison dinner were held in Stamford. The day included morning and afternoon sessions at the chamber building and noon dinner at the Stamford Inn with guests from local organizations. Homer D. Wade acted as toastmaster and was named sweetheart of the staff. R. W. Haynie spoke as president, with speakers including Col. R. L. Penick and Judge C. F. E. Coombes.
The Ford sedan was shown in Stamford with a test ride for several people. Demonstrations used rough local roads to show the car’s smooth ride and high speed. Participants praised its performance and some claimed it exceeded expectations.
Johnny Cox eleven year old son of Mr and Mrs Cox of the Hastings community near Lueders died Tuesday of diphtheria and was buried Wednesday afternoon in the Lueders cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by W N Kinney of the Stamford Undertaking Co.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Pennell on South Swenson avenue was destroyed by fire Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Jones have returned from a holiday visit in Wichita Falls, where they were guests of Mr. Jones' mother, Mrs. F. E. Cowsett. Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Mitchell have returned from Albany where they spent the Christmas holidays visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. R. F. Robertson and son have returned from a holiday visit in San Angelo.
Stamford Music Club showcases Fort Worth talents in a grand concert at the city auditorium. Performers include pianist Jeannette L. Tillett and violinist Clyde Whitlock assisted by soprano Mrs. James A. White, under director Mrs. Jack Booth. Mayor Tayman opens program.
The New Year brought the coldest spell of winter to Stamford and much of the state with a Friday cold wave. Katy freight depot records show a low of 10 degrees above zero at 6 AM Sunday, marking the coldest point in the period.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce appoints its 1924 standing committees this week under President W. G. Swenson. Committees include Finance and Membership, Highway, Railroad, Poultry and Dairy, Parks, and more with named chairs and members. Local visitors and a concert program highlight a club event with guests from Abilene and nearby towns.
County Agent announces a free three day poultry school in Stamford January 11 to 13. Lectures by D H Reid, W T Whittaker, Myrtle Murry, R A Dunn and others cover chick care, diseases, parasites, feeding, marketing and home grown seeds with expert talks designed for Jones County farmers. Benny Burrow returned home for holidays.
Dallas leader Mr Jb Leigh, corresponding secretary of the Baptist state W M U and state young people's leader, will visit Abilene next week with Mrs Leigh to conduct a district conference and plan a encampment. Local events include meetings at Lillas Penick's home and a Jones county W M U session with Miss Lilian Penick coordinating youth leaders.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Newman of Tuxedo died Sunday and was buried Monday in Fairview Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wm. C. Moffett. Arrangements were handled by W. N. Kinney of Stamford Undertaking Co.
A festive party at Lueder s home on December 30 to celebrate Christmas and New Year featured parlor games and music. Guests included Gertrude Sharbutt, Gladys Sandlin, Annette Sandlin, Walter Ekdahl, John Nelson, Foard Hentor, and many others. News of students’ travel and a birth at Abilene noted.
