Stamford Merchants Set 1962 Holidays

Stamford merchants will observe the same holidays in 1962 as last year. The only change is two Christmas days instead of one. Holidays include Memorial Day May 30, Independence Day July 4, Thanksgiving November 22, Christmas December 25 and 26, and New Year’s Day January 1.

Exchange Club Names Officers for Six Months

Byron Alleman was installed Friday as the new president of the Stamford Exchange Club succeeding Joseph High. New officers include M. D. Thompson as vice president and Frank Moore as second vice president, with Deas Robertson as secretary treasurer replacing Al Lerry. Board members are Clifford Beggs Cecil Gregory and Joseph High with holdovers Durward Young M. D. Thompson and Alvin Sylvester.

Rowland to Judge Haskell FFA Show

Brad Howland of Stamford a vocational agriculture teacher at Leeders High School will judge the annual Haskell County FFA livestock show Saturday. The show will be held at Rochester with entries from Haskell Rule and Rochester FFA chapters.

Mrs. Lawrence Crider, who suffered a concussion from a fall at home on December 29, has returned home after a stay at Stamford Sanitarium.

FitzGerald to Attend Texas Education Conference

H. S. Fitzgerald superintendent of Stamford schools will attend the Texas Education Agency midwinter conference in Austin on Thursday and Friday. The program includes a symposium on accreditation standards and development and a study on superior and talented public school students.

Special Venire Called for Murder Trial in Anson

A 100 person venire is summoned for Alfred Castoreno to face murder with malice charges in 104th District Court Anson. The case involves John Mendez shot on West Reynolds Street September 25 and dying at Stamford Sanitarium. Castoreno says Mendez shot him in the leg a year earlier.

City to Start Street Paving Program in Stamford

Stamford voters backed a bond issue for city paving. The plan shifts to assessed, not voluntary, work with blocks paved when 75 percent sign up. City pays about one third. property owners cover the rest and curb gutter costs. Chamber of Commerce aid may be sought to verify paid blocks. Graveling program eyed with city hauling and spreading gravel at owner expense.

New Veterinary Hospital Planned by Dr Ballard

Dr David Ballard announces a large animal hospital addition to Stamford Veterinary Hospital on Avoca highway near the south city limits. W T Pete Yaney of Wichita Falls secured the contract. construction will begin after weather permits and cost is set at 22 000.

Stamford Girl Rates All-State Band Honors

Stamford High School student Tee Selmon earned All-State Band honors at a Radford Auditorium clinic at McMurry College Abilene. Four others qualified for All-Region Band Ward Hinds Larry Grimm Martha Mayes Johnny Massey and 380 students from 44 schools attended Region 11 Clinic W B Mayes led the Stamford group and the All-Region Band performed Saturday night.

Cold Weather Slows Stamford Area Activities

Stamford area shut down on midweek due to a severe cold wave. Temperatures dipped to near ten degrees with light snow falling on Tuesday and Thursday. Oliver Street PTA meeting was postponed Tuesday night and the Pierian Club gathering Thursday night was canceled.

Merging of Fire Police Depts To Be Studied

Stamford City Council will study a plan to merge the police and fire departments. Mayor J R Kelley appointed a committee including Police Chief Wade Watts Fire Chief B Q Cooper, Fire Chief Dick Rowl and City Manager Harry Steenson to investigate the idea. The panel will gather data from cities using the merged model and from Texas Municipal League and police and fire associations.
