Cotton Harvest Rapid As Fair Weather Persists

With continued clear weather farmers work from dawn to night as gins run nonstop. The cotton is mostly stripped with ball-pullers still active. trailers are scarce. A Corinth fire disrupted lint cleaners delaying operations 30 to 48 hours, shifting load to Stamford Avoca and other area gins. Most gins exceed 100 bales per 24 hours and farmers expect the bulk harvested in a week to ten days. Government grading delays continue amid heavy ginning.

Stonewall County Livestock Show Sees 100 Entries

Stonewall 4-H and FFA members enter over 100 head of livestock at the county Livestock Show to be judged at the 4-H barn. Prize money totals 860 dollars across steers beef heifers lambs and swine with Bill Palmyer Motley County agent as judge.

Local FFA Show Set for Saturday in Stamford

More than 61 entries will be judged in downtown Stamford on Saturday at the local FFA Live stock Show. Jimmie Laurie of Roby will judge all entries, with the event starting about 8 a.m. at the southeast corner of the square. Weldon Holbrooks says about 30 boys are expected to participate, with classes in sheep, breeding beef, beef steers, commercial calves, swine, broilers and capons. The broiler and capon show will be in the city auditorium.

Jones County Livestock Show Set In Stamford

The Jones County Livestock Show will be held January 20 at the Texas Cowboy Reunion Grounds in Stamford. About 450 entries have been received from Stamford Anson Hawley Hamlin Lueders Avoca and several Jones County 4-H groups. closing entries January 9. Judges include Max Steward Roby Byron Grieman and Marvin Weber. The broiler and capon show will be judged January 19.

CofC Office Now Issuing Poll Tax Receipts

The Chamber of Commerce and County Clerk’s office offer poll tax receipts at the CofC office in Stam ford to spare a trip to Anson. Exemption forms are available for eligible voters aged 21 plus. receipts are mailed from the County office. People over 60 do not have to register in towns under 10 000 population.

Funeral for Morris Jones Held at Anson Methodist Church

Funeral services for Morris Jones, 49, office manager for Jones County ASC, were held Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Anson. Mr. Jones died of a heart attack Tuesday morning at Anson General Hospital at 7 40 a m.

One-Car Crash Near Sagerton Claims Life And Injures Four

A one car crash near Sagerton on December 23 killed 16 year old Janice Jones and injured four others. Driver James Wendeborn 19 of Rule suffered a broken back and lacerations. Passengers Lloyd Hatfield 18 of Aspermont Martha Green 24 of Lampasas and Diane Dunlap 16 of Rochester sustained multiple injuries. The 1955 Mercury left the highway near Lagerton and rolled at least five times. Emergency surgery was performed at Stamford Sanitarium and Hendrick Hospital Abilene through Christmas Day.

Mrs W R Underwood 79 wife of a retired Baptist minister died Tuesday morning in Hondo Hospital. She served as pastor’s wife in Rule Albany and Baird and lived in Stamford after 1949 retirement. Born Mary Elizabeth Bute September 15 1882, she married W R Underwood June 26 1904 at May Pearl Texas. Funeral 2:30 pm Thursday at First Baptist Church with Rev Jack Southerland officiating. Firemen Battle Grass and Gin Fires in December

Stamford Fire Department ended December with 99 alarms, 81 inside the city and 18 outside, answering 33 calls in December. Insured losses reached 20,177 dollars, considered unusually low by Chief Dick Rowland as crews fought grass, gins, and sporadic building blazes with steady runs from the 19th through the 31st.

Grand Jury Fails To Report Tuesday Night

Jones County grand jury met in an all day session Tuesday and recessed until Thursday without issuing a report. Fourteen cases are being investigated including a murder charge against a Stamford woman who shot her estranged husband. District Judge Owen Thomas will call docket Thursday for the term of court. A Stamford man indicted earlier faces trial on a murder charge.

Stamford High Band Members to Compete at Region II Clinic

Six Stamford High School Band performers join 350 students from 37 high schools at the Region II Band Clinic at McMurry College Abilene. Local teacher W E Mayes accompanies the Stamford group including Ward Hinds Larry Grimm Johnny Massey Tee Selmon Martha Mayes and Beverly Baldwin. The event features a 7 30 p m public concert at Radford Auditorium as top players form the all region band and eight members advance to the all state band in Dallas next February.

Two Mexican Youths Nabbed In Robbery Attempt

Two Latin American youths were stopped inside Hassen's Department Store Tuesday night December 26 after attempting to steal clothing valued at more than 700 dollars. Police and owner Fareed Hassen recovered seven bags of goods. one youth had recent parole history and the other was detained for illegal entry.
