White Way Proposal Brings 1st Texas Negro Interscholastic Meet to Stamford
The annual 1st Texas Negro Interscholastic League basketball and track meet will be staged in Stamford on February 26 1938 with the tournament to be held here after a league meeting in Abilene. Stamford was chosen over Breckenridge Sweetwater Lubbock and San Angelo. E W Mangram Washington High principal announced the selection and R B White Anson was reelected director general with Mangram as vice director general. Mangram said Stamford won acceptance due to its hospitality and familiarity with the teams.

The United Charities in Stamford coordinates Santa Claus and toy distribution for all children regardless of race including Mexican and Black children. Funds provide toy purchase orders, food baskets, and church “Write Christmas” services plus Christmas trees at multiple locations. Stamford Considers New White Way Lights Plan
Stamford city council heard a proposal from West Texas Utilities to install 12 modern white way lights at 400 candlepower in the business district. Eight would replace obsolete plaza lights and four would go on the square corners. The city would incur no installation cost but pay $4 per light monthly for current. residence rates would rise to $1 per month. Installation and rate readjustments could raise the city’s annual electric bill by about $1200.

A Sunyside area wildcat in the Grisham Hunter No. 1 FB Appling district near Stamford is pumping about seven barrels per hour in the first three hours with water shutoff. The well, located five and a half miles from Stamford port and eight by road, is projected to yield 160 barrels daily and extends oil toward Stamford in two directions. Royalty demand on adjoining lands has surfaced since the discovery. The Palo Pinto lime test reached 2 640 feet and a twin well is planned.
