A Stamford American reader argues that government plow up payments and land rentals create unemployment. He contends plantation owners push tenants off land to keep relief funds, urging stopping idle land rent, taxing large cotton operations, and limiting cotton bales to reduce unemployment and realign farming incentives.
Dr C C Shell age 94 a Stamford pioneer physician and one of the last Confederate veterans here is critically ill at home with little hope of recovery. Family and relatives gather at his bedside including daughters Mrs Greer Kincannon Mrs Norra McAdoo Mrs Jim Pickering Mrs Allen Shields Mrs Chas Tucker and Jules Shell son. Grandchildren and a great grandson are named.
Light showers and mist this week edged monthly rainfall to 2.17 inches while Tuesday and Wednesday added .80 inch. Yearly total reaches 18.388 inches, 8.02 inches below 1936. Farmers welcome the moisture as grain benefits, noting Stamford's December 1936 rainfall at .60 inch.
Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Culwell of Avoca hosted a large family reunion at their Culwell home. Seven Culwell children, all born in Jones county near Avoca, joined relatives from Texas and Louisiana for the gathering, their first in 12 years. Also present were Mrs. Rufus Garth and two sons.
A 1-4 inch scale model of an 1870s switch engine, built by the Centinela Valley Model Railway Club of Hawthorne California, was shown in Dobyns jewelry window by F M Johnson honorary club member. The 1500 piece rolling stock collection features electric operation on 10 to 25 volts. Johnson presents pictures of miniature yards and 266 feet of track and crafts own scale cars and track.
In north Jones county about 16 oil tests are active or finishing as firms plan extensive drilling by mid January. Operators include Humble Oil and Refining, Tren Mountain Oil, and Fain-McGaha. several wildcat projects continue west of Stamford.
Dr. A. D. McReynolds addressed the Rotary Club on a talk titled A Queer World. He challenged pet theories and common superstitions, delivering an engaging view that mixed humor with critique. J. K. Brady led the program as classification committee chair. Guests included Bill Ray of St Worth, formerly Stamford, invited by Bernard Bryant, and Marion B. Thomas of Anderson, invited by T. A. Upshaw.
Wayland Daniels of Stamford sustained a broken right shoulder blade when his arm was caught in a line shaft at the Stamford Oil Mill Monday night. He was taken to Stamford Sanitarium for treatment. the injuries were described as painful but not critical.
Dr Clarence E Gilmore of Paris wins first prize of 100 in the Lone Star Gas System photo contest announced in the current issue. George I Fetzer of Dallas takes 75, Mrs Ruby F Clements of Fort Worth 50, and Mrs J D Coulter of Bowie 25. The contest ran from Oct 11 to Dec 18 and included 100 ten dollar weekly prizes.
A daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Baker of Stamford on December 26. Several patients including Mrs FE T Reves of Lueders and Miss Tollison of Stamford receive treatment or observation. Don Richard Whitworth of Avora, pneumonia patient, and Elmer Arnett of Rule undergo procedures. A son born to Mr. and Mrs Carnes of Hamlin. Multiple residents from Rotan Anson Rule McCaulley and Peacock listed among hospital cases.
Vergie Rape of Abilene was elected president of the Graduate Nurses Association of District 15 for the coming year at a Stamford Sanitarium meeting. Kathrine LaVeile, superintendent, presided in the absence of officers. New officers include Mildred Pruess first vice president, Milly Marie Davison second vice president, Jewel Barton third vice president, and Ruth Maxson secretary treasurer. Two new directors were elected, and the next annual meeting will be in Colorado on January 15.
Stamford officials report unusually heavy holiday mail with about 200 sacks daily. On a peak day 25 to 30 sacks left northward, 60 to 70 on the Katy, and 100 on night mail toward Abilene. Postmen note record Christmas cards and smaller packages as customers greet them like Santa Claus.
Jones County ginned 62 536 bales by December 13 from the 1947 crop, counting round bales as half. This compares with 94 236 bales by December 13, 1936. Haskell County ginned 45 408 bales, up from 19 739 the previous year.
Littl Elly H Rowan twenty four month old son of Mr and Mrs T L Rowan of Layerton divided candy with his eleven month old brother Herbert in the Stamford Sanitarium area last Friday night. He backed into a pan of hot water causing burns and was taken to the hospital for treatment where he is progressing.
T. M. Harris of Turlock, California, is visiting his daughter. G. H. Gatewood and family are noted in the same social snippet.
An Anson event recounts a Jones County pioneer's view that modern cowboy dances gallop through steps, contrasting with the slower dances of the first Cowboy Christmas ball. He notes older cowboys arrived broke and left for spring ranch work, while younger attendees enjoyed a lively scene.

Miss Sue Kinney daughter of Mr and Mrs J H Kinney of this city is elected treasurer of the Sui Rows College Pioneer Club founded in 1926. The club affiliated with the West Texas Historical and Scientific Society supports museum archives and frontier dances. Dances provide social activity and trips to the Indian Village and the Dude Ranch are planned for spring term. Miss Kinney spent Christmas holidays with home folks.
EF L Hutchinson of Radford Grocery Co was chosen president succeeding George Zachary of Waples Platter Co. Jim Stell became first vice president D E Prewit second vice president and Richard Lane rotary treasurer. New board members are W Cul Leavitt Hoellia Atkerson Wade Youngblood and J R Tinsley. The last meeting featured an informal program.
Early Christmas morning services were held at Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. Hugo B Haterius in charge. The service featured Swedish and English readings, a musical program by Mrs Haterius and guests, and a generous offering for missionary purposes. Sunday school presented a lengthy program of readings songs and recitations, ending with gifts of books candy fruit and apples for attendees.
The Texas Planning Board reports cellulose derived from East Texas pines and other woods along with native bamboo ragweeds sweet potatoes and about a dozen crops is now used in artificial silks lacquers paints enamels cellulose and collodion for waterproofing materials.
John Wenetechleger aged 49, a former Stamford resident, died instantly when struck by a car while walking on a highway near Alamo on Christmas Eve. The body was sent to Kinney Funeral Home for burial. service held at Kinney Chapel with Rev. Dick OBrien. Interment in New Hope cemetery. Survived by two daughters, mother, seven sisters, a brother, and two grandchildren.
A Christmas gathering was held for Stamford American Force members and families at Mr. and Mrs. Yorks home. Guests included Mrs. Crow, Mrs. Mahood, and Miss Norma York with entertainment by Frank and Krory Moail. Gifts were given to Guy Cannon and Cleburne Huston among others.
Funeral for Mrs Ruby May Hill Johnson 20 died Christmas Day in Albuquerque. Services at Harnew church with Rev. Skies and Rev. Palmer. burial in Fairview cemetery. Survived by husband Carl, daughter Warta Jean, seven sisters, two brothers. Funeral director Kinney.
