Compulsory School Attendance Starts January 2 1930

At a December meeting the Board of Education set the 1929 30 compulsory attendance period to begin January 2 1930 and run for 100 consecutive school days. Children eight to fourteen must attend unless exempt. The main exemption applies to those over twelve who completed seventh grade and help the family. proof needed. Penalties include fines up to 25 for repeated offenses and separate offenses per day after warning. Employers beware it is unlawful to hire children during school hours with penalties up to 10 fines and daily offenses after warning.

Annual Community Christmas Tree To Be Held Next Week

Arrangements for the community Christmas tree at the city auditorium on Wednesday evening December 18 are under way. The program includes a Christ birth pageant by Campfire Girls and a massed choir carol sing. Gifts for the city’s indigent will be collected at the auditorium and distributed by the Pastors' Association before Christmas. Toys have been collected and repaired by Boy Scouts. The drive seeks staples, clothing and money to aid Stamford’s poor during the holidays. A committee will receive gifts from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the end of the program at 7:30 p.m.

Stamford duo to return home for Christmas break

Miss La Rue Humphrey daughter of Mr and Mrs C N Humphrey and Clifton Bruce son of Mr and Mrs W G Bruce both Stamford natives and TCU sophomores will leave campus December 20 when finals end. Holidays run from 4 pm December 20 to 8 am January 2. Humphrey majors home economics with biology English Spanish social science and participates in Home Economics Club Spanish Club and the Upperettes. Bruce studies sociology English economics and government and participates in the football team basketball and track.

Cotton Ginned To Date In Stamford 1929 Season

More than 4000 bales of cotton from the 1929 crop have been ginned in Stamford this season. By Thursday noon the year’s total reached 4170 bales, compared with 6075 bales on the same date last year and 12 476 bales on that date in 1927.

Stamford Chamber of Commerce opposes Wichita Valley railroad’s request to discontinue one daily passenger train between Wichita Falls and Abilene. J. C. Watson travels to Fort Worth for 10 a m hearing with other towns. Sentiment varies locally. most favor keeping double daily service, with a preference for night trains if one set must go. Heath Dies After Stroke at 62 in Stamford Texas

C 1 Heath 62 died at his home 512 East Reynolds Stamford after a stroke Wednesday. Born March 16 1867 in Whitney Texas he moved to Stamford 1915 lived east of town then on Reynolds street. Survived by wife a daughter Fay Heath Stamford son Elmer Heath Old Glory one brother B F Heath Osceola Texas two sisters Mrs T A Jean and Mrs J S Terrill Hamlin. Auto Mechanic Suffers Skull Fracture At Work

J. L. Blaylock 38 Hedberg Garage mechanic is hospitalized in Stamford Sanitarium after a fractured skull occurred late Tuesday afternoon while removing a frozen axle. Ben Knutson struck the axle with a sledge hammer, causing it to slam Blaylock’s skull just above the left eye. An operation removed a skull fragment. He rests and may leave the sanitarium in a week or ten days. Also noted is a University of Illinois aluminum coating process.

Official Opening Of Xmas Shopping Season In Stamford

A large crowd welcomed Santa Claus to Stamford for the Christmas shopping season kickoff. Mayor Warren B Tayman and Chamber of Commerce officials led a parade with police through business streets, Santa on a fire truck distributed candy, then visited stores as shoppers filled windows lit with festive displays. Streets and post office plaza were illuminated, and merchants reported a record Saturday turnout.

Rotary Governor To Stamford Club Visit

R. B. Bryant of Stamford, governor of Rotary International District 41, will visit his home club at the regular luncheon Tuesday. Bryant will deliver the program’s main address. Ray Rector, committee head, spoke on community service activities including Cross and United Charities drives and Boy Scout funding efforts. Rev. Gaston Foole of Haskell Methodist Church gave the main address on Community Service.

Mesquite Grove 291 Woodman Circle met December 10 with good attendance. Two visitors Miss Laura Pate Albany and Mrs Ella Pustejovsky New Hope Grove were welcomed. Stamford Chamber Banquet Sells Out at Basemen t Church

Tickets for the Stamford Chamber of Commerce annual meeting on Friday December 20 are on sale at 75 cents. County Court To Convene At Anson Monday Morning

Jones county court opens December 16 at 10 a m with Judge Owen Thomas in charge. First week covers probate and non jury matters. second week handles jury cases and begins December 30 due to Christmas proximity. A list of jurors from Anson Stamford Hamlin and other towns is summoned for the second week. Civil docket includes cases like First National Bank of Hamlin v Hill and multiple debt and damages suits.

Chiropractors Meet for Oil Belt Society Session

Thirty members of the Oil Belt Chiropractic Society gathered in the City Auditorium at 3 p.m. for a monthly meeting led by Dr. H. A. Hoy with J. C. Watson welcoming visitors. Dr. P. L Myers spoke on association plans and legislative hopes. Beulah Gould chaired the banquet at Central Christian church. Cisco won the bid to host the next meeting in January.

Miss Holley Named Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge

Miss Lynder Holley was elected Noble Grand of Stamford Rebekah Lodge at a meeting last week. Officers chosen include Mrs. H. L. Park as vice grand Miss Salome Keen as secretary Mrs. H. A. Day as treasurer Miss Nell Malone as lodge deputy and Mrs. H. P. Austin as representative to the Grand Lodge. Installation set for the first regular meeting in January.

Stamford air crash kills two in Sunday flight

Lloyd Henson 31 of Haskell and Winnie Williams 19 of Stamford died when Henson’s lightly powered biplane dived from 300 to 400 feet at Stamford Airport. The plane struck the field, exploded as its fuel tank ignited, and both occupants were burned. The accident occurred as Williams joined Henson for a flight home, with witnesses noting trouble gaining altitude and a wing stall before the dive.

Presbyterian Pastor Will Stay In Stamford Church

Rev. Fred S. Rogers will remain as pastor of Central Presbyterian church in Stamford after the Stamford church refused his resignation and the Presbytery at Abilene declined to dissolve the pastoral relationship. Rogers said he is pleased to stay and noted the parish had overcome financial difficulties with support from local leaders including J. C. Pinson.
