Jail Visit of a Frontierswoman Reveals Ringgold Prison Life

In 1851 Teresa Griffin Viele and her husband Lt. Egbert L. Viele traveled to Ringgold Barracks near Rio Grande City. She visited the local jail and described two prisoners, one a grim Mexican who had stabbed his friend over dried beef, and another an American killer on a spree. The narrative, drawn from Viele's memoir Following the Drum, notes the jail's layout and the jailer’s complicity in an attempted escape.
