Heller and Miller Share Gene Stuckey Award Honor

Don Heller and Ricky Miller were co-recipients of the Gene Stuckey award at the annual football banquet held Monday night at Cliff House Restaurant. The fourth award in memory of official Stuckey honors a senior athlete for talent, character, and leadership on and off the field. Varsity players received plaques for Dr. Tony Selmon, Willie Medford, George Rollins, and John Blackstock. Special guests included coaches wives, SHS twirlers and cheerleaders, with Sonia Carter providing entertainment.

County history book pickup in Jones County Friday and Saturday

Residents who ordered The First Hundred Years A History of Jones County can pick up copies Friday and Saturday at the Cowboy Country Museum from 10 am to 4 pm. Hooper Shelton will sign books, and an Old Quilts Display by the Stamford Lioness Club will be open, featuring about 50 quilts spanning over a century.

Artist Finds Talent at Age 73 in December Display

Vivian Culwell Edmonds, 75, named artist of the month for December with about 75 paintings on display at the Chamber of Commerce office. A former Frog Holler School pupil and childhood playmate of Cong. Omar Burleson, she began serious art in the last two years after taking classes with Nell Bennett in Stamford. Edmonds has won Jones County Fair prizes and studied with John Crump of Anson, while balancing family life with five married daughters and nine grandchildren.

ACU taps ex Bulldog Ted Sitton as head coach

Ted Sitton, former Stamford Bulldog and Abilene Christian College standout, has been named head coach at Abilene Christian University. Born January 30, 1932 in Stamford, Sitton played quarterback at Stamford High School before college and has coached at ACU, Graham, and Abilene High School. He and his wife Gloria Pace Sitton have four children and multiple grandchildren living across Texas.

Ambulance plan, gas rate talks mark Stamford council meeting

Stamford council tabled natural gas rate hike and a subdivision water contract while debating ambulance service changes. Own ambulance duties sparked proposals from Gene Stanford to assume all calls with a lease option, as officials weigh legal issues. The sole enacted measure was a second reading ordinance closing a south Stamford alley and street.

Cantata at First Baptist Church Sunday Evening

The First Baptist Church Adult Choir directed by Larry Armentrout will present The King Of Kings cantata this Sunday at 7 p.m. with Lynda White Marilyn White Lillian Southerland on piano and organ and soloists Mrs Larry Armen trout Mrs Allan Wedeking Bill Glenn and Mark Lovver. After the service the congregation will donate wrapped white food gifts for needy families and the choir will perform for Teakwood residents Sunday afternoon. An all church reception follows the service as December activities begin the holiday season for the church community.

Stamford Chamber manager resigns to join Denton post

Darrell W. Woolwine 39 resigns as Stamford Chamber of Commerce manager effective Dec 15 to become assistant manager and head of the convention and visitor bureau in Denton starting Dec 18. He led local events and cooperated with the Stamford Housing Authority and Day Care Center during 111 months here.
