Stamford Federal Savings and Loan to seek name change

Members of Stamford Federal Savings and Loan Association voted to apply to change the firm’s name to First Association of Stamford. The change, if approved by the Federal Home Loan Bank, would make the entity First Federal Stamford, reflecting its expanded Jones County service area and statewide lending authorization. Officers and directors remain unchanged, and account insurance is unaffected.

Cotton harvest nears 40 000 bale mark in Stamford area

The Stamford area reports about 36 826 bales ginned across seven gins since Sept 20 with 2 355 more bales waiting on yards in Stamford Tuxedo Bricksdale Lagerton and Avoca. Harvest is about 75 percent complete with ideal weather and two weeks remain.

Stamford Neighbors to Receive New Southwestern Bell Directory

Residents in Stamford will get a new Southwestern Bell telephone directory. Delivery starts December 17 and should take about two weeks. Bill Gilliland, Southwestern Bell manager, says 3600 directories are planned for initial delivery. The cover features a blue bonnet scene typical of Texas.

Three Stamford men seek charter for Stamford Art Foundation

Three Stamford men led by Mayor J F Hudson along with Jake Westfall and Jack Watson apply for a charter to form Stamford Art Foundation a nonprofit to sponsor art shows and sales for charity They expect prompt state secretary decision and plan to form a board of directors after charter approval The foundation will run an art exhibit at the 1974 Texas Cowboy Reunion with the Cowboy Reunion financing pavilion renovations for the show.

Neighbors Help Dick Boedeker Harvest 51 Bales of Cotton

More than two dozen farmers and friends joined in harvesting Boedeker’s cotton after his illness. They used 11 cotton strippers and trailers, hauled to the gin, and supplied their own fuel. Children and family assisted, while women prepared lunch for the hardworking volunteers.

Rose and Sons Tentative Bid For Abilene Hospital Project

Stamford hospital district board of directors voted Monday to tentatively accept Rose and Sons Construction of Abilene for the proposed building project. Hospital administrator John Martin said the agreement awaits finalization of contract technicalities and will be signed once resolved.

Local firm to mark 50th anniversary

High's Flowers of Stamford will celebrate 50 years with an open house on Sunday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 502 S McKinley. The shop began in 1923 under Mrs Ona High and moved to its current Stamford location in 1924. The business is run in partnership by her sons James and Joseph. Warren operates a separate Stamford flower shop in Abilene.

The city cut water to Stamford residents Tuesday night after a break in a 16 inch main at Berthelot and Campbell. Reported at 3 36 pm, crews worked for hours against high pressure before restoring service about 8 pm.

Stamford Bulldogs Dominate District 6 AA All District Honors

Fourteen Stamford Bulldog football players earned District 6 AA All District recognition for 1973 with five on the first and second teams. Pat Gillespie and Donbar were the only Stamford players to make first team on both offense and defense.
