The First State Bank in Abilene faced a $1000 shortage after Fay Anders counted cash from a bank transaction and realized extra funds were in his pocket. He had cashed a $2500 cashier check and received a $500 cashier check plus $4 in fees, ending with a $1000 surplus later tallied to him.
Reverend John Gibbs of Central Presbyterian will be guest minister at St John s Methodist Church Sunday evening August 26 at 8 o clock. He and Charles E Fike of Stamford work together in the Stamford Ministerial Association. The congregations unite for the evening service while Fike and his family are vacationing in New Mexico.
E. B. Britton the postmaster warns against damaging rural mail boxes. He cites stiff penalties as several complaints reach the office of boxes shot at damaged removed from posts and left in the road.
The Stamford City Council heard upbeat reports on the Paint Creek water project from engineer Simon Freese and the land committee. Bids and land acquisitions advanced, with 32 pipeline specs and 17 dam specs in bidders’ hands and several tracts totaling about 1,477 acres purchased from Clifton, Hester, and Berry.
Merchants announced model lineups for the Jaycees sponsored fall fashion show at the Grand Theater on Thursday night August 30. Each store listed five models including Hassen's Ben Buie Maurine Carlile and others. Atha's Doris Peterson Jane Prewit and more. J M McDonald's four models. D and H Department five models. Cobb's five models. Strauss' four models. B and H Shop five models. Christeen's and J C Penney plan to participate but had not announced by Wednesday. Mrs W L Lewis assists the models in the presentation. Commentator not announced.
Sagerton Methodist Church will open a revival on August 24 and continue through September 2. Rev E L Kirk pastor announces revival with Rev Elton Wyatt of Cactus preaching. Prayer service starts 7 45 p m and evening service at 8 15 oclock. All are invited.
Three miles northwest of Nugent in Jones County Woodley Petroleum Co No 3 A H F Lewis 1 spot produced 91 barrels oil in 23 hours from 1847 54 feet open hole. New wildcats planned by S C Herring Drilling Co Abilene GPC Gulf Plains Corp Corpus Christi and Argren Frazier Abilene plus Champlin Refining Co Enid Oklahoma and Skelly Oil Co in several counties.
Stamford Exchangites voted at a luncheon to hold the Sunshine Special on Friday August 31 with Stamford school children in the first four grades as guests. Nat Wash presented a program of sound movies featuring top names in musical entertainment. Aubrey Foster presided in the absence of club president Harmon Daffern.
Rev Cecil Fox pastor of the Rochester Methodist Church will lead the Avoca revival at the Avoca Methodist Church from August 24 to September 1 with services at 10 am daily. Rev Bourdon Smith of Goree will direct song and youth work. invitation extended by Rev Billy Wilkinson.
The city council kept the tax rate at 1.25 per 100 dollars of property value, the same as 1950 after last year’s cut from 2.50 during a full revaluation. 1950 assessed value was 7,362,199 and 1951 valuation is projected at 7,728,077, an increase of about 365 thousand, city manager Grady Bowdry reported.
A fire damaged the Palace Theatre projection booth Saturday afternoon when film in use burst into flames. The blaze was contained by the fire department with no injuries and the theatre closed pending damage assessment. Fire started about 4 10 p m and was under control by 4 20 p m.
Stamford VFW All Stars close the softball season with a two game set in Haskell on Thursday night. The winner of the Tri County league will be decided in the first game as Weinert and Stamford each own two wins in the playoff series. The All Stars beat Weinert 6 0 at Weinert last Wednesday and lost 10 at home Friday night.
The Tri-County Square Dance Association of Jones Knox and Haskell counties hosts a dance at Round Up Hall on the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds on Thursday August 23 beginning at p.m. Note the time is incomplete in the source text.
Stamford hosts a four day free chest X-ray service for ages 15 and up at the Lone Star Gas Company building with state supplied mobile equipment. Joe Lambert coordinates committees for Aug 24 to 28, assisted by P T A groups, Junior Senior High PTA, Pierian Club, BPW Club and Jaycees for logistics and outreach. A noon film “Another to Conquer” screens at the Grand theatre for the Exchange Club.
Voters in Stamford and New Hope will ballot on Saturday August 25 to determine if the New Hope school district should consolidate with the Stamford Independent district. A portion of New Hope had been annexed to Avoca already, while 11 sections remain to be decided in consolidation. Elections occur in both districts.
Temperature in Stamford fell from the upper nineties to 72 as a light shower moved through Tuesday afternoon. Rain totaled 0.46 inch with heavier amounts in Tuxedo and nearby areas. Farmers expect moisture to boost cotton yields. more rain soon would help.
Chief Bob Miller announces a 10 day effort starting Friday August 24 to curb stray dogs. Owners must tie or keep dogs in yards as complaints grow of dogs chasing children and tearing lawns amid rabies season. Strays will be picked up and disposed of by the police or city pound.
Stamford held its first model airplane meet at the high school grounds on Sunday, described as very successful by Chamber of Commerce manager Lee Walker. Prizes were awarded in rubber launched gliders, hand launched gliders, unlimited rubber, Art aircraft, control line speed and stunt, plus a combat trophy for the local team.
About 100 farmers and agricultural agency representatives gathered in Lueders for the inaugural Jones and Shackelford county land judging event. County agents Bill Lehmberg and W. C. Vines led the program with assistance from Truman Kidwell Olin Potts Bruce Taylor Paul Haines and Di Worb Coke. Contestants evaluated soil attributes on farms owned by John Swenson and Bruce Taylor and recommended erosion control measures. Additional soil and land judging schools were held in Nolan Taylor and Tom Green counties. The day included devotional services and upcoming religious revival plans in Sagerton and Rockdale with speakers from India and Hardin-Simmons University.
City Council votes to hold a meeting with Sheriff Bill Dunnody Highway Patrolman Jerry Bright and Chief Bob Miller to explore a two way radio installation linking local police with state highway patrol and county sheriff regions. A manufacturer representative may attend. Also notes church broadcast August 26 and Training Union revival at First Baptist.
The American Shoe Shop owned by Bo Reed has moved to 112 West McHarg and is now open for business. The shop previously occupied the site next to the Stamford Coffee Shop.
National Guard Company M of Stamford part of the 42nd Infantry arrives at Camp Polk Louisiana for a two week training period. Commanded by Ldeut James Linds ey the unit joined Abilene and Sweetwater units after traveling by train. Forty nine soldiers and three officers are in camp with some men proceeding to Camp Polk ahead of the main arrival.
The 1951 Bulldog high school annual will be sold in the high school cafeteria Thursday between 12 and 4 p.m. Richie Lane, editor of the annual, announced the sale.
