Oil Boom Sweeps Eastern Stonewall County This Week

The eastern part of Stonewall County shows vigorous oil activity with seven wells completed, a near completion, two wildcats staked, a field well spotted, and two wildcat plugbacks. Notable results include City Service No. 1 Carey near Hamlin producing 152.80 barrels daily and Skelly No. 2-A Dalby near Aspermont yielding 109.69 barrels in six hours. The Katz Field north west of O'Brien reports 283.02 barrels daily from No. 5-B Julian McGregor. Additional wildcats planned near Old Glory Swenson and Swenson area with several offset tests and new fields such as Double Mountain and Flowers Canyon Sand in the region.

Blackburns Return From Four Week National Park Trip

Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Blackburn and their sons Billy and Victor complete a four week vacation to national parks and Canadian sites. The group visits Bammi and Lake Louise in Canada with Edmonton friends Mr. and Mrs. George Cheatham and two daughters. The route includes Colorado Springs Manitou Pikes Peak Estes Park Yellowstone Grand Teton Glacier National Park Salt Lake City and Cheyenne Yellow stone Park sighting.

Local Youth Among First To Be Inducted into Marines at Abilene

Billy Baggett son of Mr and Mrs G B Baggett of Stamford is among four men inducted at Abilene Army and Air Force Recruiting and Induction Main Station. The surprise call sent them to Dallas Tuesday night for boat training in San Diego. Baggett, Stamford High School graduate, worked as a Sunray Oil seismograph observer in Lamesa. his wife Dena Quaid is with his parents.

Local Woman Charged With Arson in Stamford

Mrs G T Bridges of Stamford faces arson charges after a Sunday night fire at the Bridges residence on North McKinley street caused substantial interior damage. She posted a $1000 bond and was released. grand jury consideration set for September.

Hardy Motor Co. Opens New Buick Dealership in City

Over 500 visitors from eleven towns attended the Grand Opening at the Hardy Motor Company building on North Swenson. The event marked the 25th year as authorized Buick dealer for Stam ford. Free refreshments were offered and music provided on the electric organ by Warren Tayman Bill Mayes David Ratliff and George Rollins. The firm recently moved from 101 S Ferguson after more than 20 years at that location.

Style Show Models Being Selected

Stamford merchants plan a fall style show sponsored by the Stamford Jaycees on August 31 at the Grand Theater. Merchants select models from Stamford women and girls to display up to five fall fashions. Dr. David Ballard, Jaycee president, will announce committees to complete plans.

Football Players To Receive Physical Exams At Stamford High

Stamford high school will give physical examinations to prospective football players Monday night. Examinations start at 6 o clock and all boys from both A and B teams planning to try out are asked to attend.

Stamford National Guard unit heads to Camp Polk for annual camp

Company M of the 142nd Infantry Stamford unit departs Saturday for Camp Polk Louisiana for a two week annual camp. Mess personnel left earlier this week and will attend special mess instruction school before the camp opens. First Lieut James W Lindsey commands the Stamford heavy weapons company.

Navy Sailor Home on 30 Day Leave

William Neal Thompson BT3 United States Navy is home on 30 day leave visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Thompson. He served aboard the USS Leonard F. Mason DD 852 as part of Task Force 77 in Korea providing screen and plane guard for carriers. Thompson and his wife and children are joined by siblings and relatives visiting Denton Kingsville Fort Worth and Garland before a planned tour to see more relatives.

Local Boy Joins Army Air Force Exercise at Camp Mackall

Otto S. Hambright 22 son of Mr and Mrs Otto S Hambright of Stamford Texas takes part in the Joint Army Air Force Exercise Southern Pine at Camp Mackall North Carolina. He serves as Section Leader for the 57 MM Rifle and holds paratrooper Jump Wings earned with the Slith Airborne Infantry Regiment in Japan. Before service he worked in oil fields in west Texas.

Johnny Brown, a Stamford native, will deliver his first sermon Sunday night at 8 at St John’s Methodist Church. Vaden Returns to Camp After 14 Day Furlough

Pvt Walter Vaden returned to Camp Cooke California after a two week furlough. He left Friday to resume duty and will receive a new assignment soon. Vaden visited family in Ruidoso and Stamford and joined in a golf tournament where Carlton won the long drive contest.

Scattered Rains Cool Area as Hail Damages Reported

Slightly cooler conditions prevailed with rain totals up to three inches west of town and 1.5 inches northeast, while Stamford saw 0.6 inches Saturday afternoon and a trace on Friday. Hail damaged cotton stalks in parts of the Tuxedo vicinity though coverage was limited.

Early-Day Tuxedo Woman Died in Austin Hospital

Mary Elizabeth Matecha aged 76 a longtime Tuxedo resident died August 9 in Austin Hospital. Funeral was August 11 at Tuxedo Methodist Church with Rev H S Hinson officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. Survived by two sons Frank and Rudolph a daughter Mary Neuman eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

John Simons Dies In Fort Worth

Funeral service for 77 year old John Wes ley Simons was held at Kinney Funeral Chapel on August 11. He was a retired farmer from the Tuxedo community who died at his daughter's Fort Worth home. Survived by two daughters and one son, plus siblings and grandchildren. Pallbearers named.
