Stamford city to open bids Friday afternoon for dam and pipeline contracts worth the first of multiple project packages. An estimated 75 to 80 bidders from the construction field are expected as city funds become available by September 15 for the 1.5 million dollar bond issue.
The 1951 Invitation golf tournament at Stamford Country Club will be held Labor Day weekend. Matched play is scheduled Sunday and Monday September 2 and 3 with qualifying from August 27 to September 1 and medalist qualifying only September 1. A long driving contest will precede the barbecue supper and Calcutta pool at 6 30 p m with golf equipment awarded as prizes in the 18 hole finals.
Postmaster Johnny Britton announced a September 2 extension of city route delivery covering blocks on East Davenport West Hand lin Park Drive Williams London Compton Vanderbilt Texas Yale and Vanderbilt areas. Residents should number houses erect mail receptacles and file change of address at the local post office. Frank Youngquist returns from Lamesa after summer work. Leroy Lundgren was a patient at Stamford Sanitarium last week.
Charles F E Hill pastor of Stamford Church of Christ and his family are on a two week vacation to Colorado after concluding an eleven day gospel meeting in Honey Grove where nine additions joined the church. Hill noted Honey Grove was his first local posting and he enjoyed reconnecting with former acquaintances. Jerry Terrell, Paint Creek High School graduate, will join Texas A&M College on September 7. Mr and Mrs L E Million Jr and son Russ spent the weekend in Austin and San Antonio before returning home Monday.
Vickie and Dub Harrison, daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. W B Harrison Jr, spent a week in Bryan visiting Mrs Harrison's parents Mr and Mrs W B Nelson. The Harrisons visited for a while after them.
Sagerton Public School will open Monday September 3 at 8 30 a m with Miss Irene Stewart as principal. An opening program at 9 a m in the auditorium will welcome patrons. Full day of classes follows registration and bus routes will reverse from last year. Judy Tyree joins the faculty along with existing teachers and staff.
Mrs. J. K. Brady travels to Dallas to visit her son Alton. On Sunday August 26 she will join a Brady family reunion in Granbury. She plans to stay about a week with indefinite further plans.
Gordon Wood leads 38 cadet players through a rigorous Bulldog Stadium football camp in Stamford as they prepare for the 1951 season opener against the Haskell Indians on September 7. Returned lettermen include ends Cotton Rivers Royce Fuqua and Johnny Webb and tackles David Basnford Paul Phy Kenneth West Max Kelley. Starter prospects hinge on these names with ticket sales planned around Bulldog Stadium.
Chief of Police Bob Miller called for motorist cooperation in Stamford to protect students. With the new school term, traffic laws near the High School Oliver Street School and Reynolds Street School will be enforced at all times. Crosswalks will be painted and students must observe them as rigorously as drivers observe laws.
A mobile unit from the State Department of Health X-rayed 1,516 people in Stamford at the Lone Star Gas Company building from Friday to Tuesday. The total surpassed last year by 565. 326 were recorded on opening day. The unit will visit Hamlin and Anson next week and later Abilene and Amarillo with ages 15 and up eligible.
Stamford will observe Labor Day Monday Sept 3 as a business holiday per the Stamford Chamber of Commerce retail trade committee. Public schools open for registration on Tuesday Sept 4. Residents plan out of town visiting over the weekend extending through the holiday.
West Stamford Field may be the name of a new oil area one half mile north of East Hamlin Field if local citizens succeed. Bob Bandeen wrote to Carl S. Shoultz and S C. Herring of Abilene who completed the well that could open the field. East Hamlin uses Swastika sand while this discovery taps Tannehill at about 2400 feet. Teas Railroad Commission names fields and invites suggestions from developers. Mrs E G Keese returned from Mt Lemmon Arizona after a two month stay visiting Senator A C Stanton in Clifton Arizona.
Mrs. George Mood arrived home by plane last week after a month as a surgical patient in Boston. She and her daughter Missy traveled to Abilene where Kinney Funeral Home ambulance brought them to Stamford. Dr mood and son Gibbs had returned about a week earlier.
Stamford public schools set Tuesday registration for fall term with classes starting next day. Supt. L W Johnson outlines grade level timing, bus routes, and cafeteria reopening. Sixth grade moves from Junior High to Reynolds and Oliver Streets buildings until Reynolds addition is finished.
Stamford public schools require smallpox vaccination for all first time entrants and diphtheria toxoid for those under nine. Birth certificates must be brought to registration for first grade. School nurse Mrs. Clay Markham notes vaccinations can be done by family doctors or by the public school nurse on a written parental request.
Despite several resignations the Stamford Public Schools announce a full faculty for the new year. James kd. Sheppard named principal of Oliver Elementary, replacing HD Peel who was recalled to service. New high school staff include Patty Jane Davis, Margaret Richards, Peter Hagus, Weldon Holbrooks, Allie Beth Rosson, Ernest Heath, and others. junior high and Reynolds Elementary lists also show multiple appointments across departments and schools.
Stamford merchants present an annual style show at the Grand theatre featuring outfits for a college girl, her sisters, mother, and younger children. A new round of models includes Judy Merriott and others. Dr. David Ballard presides over the Jaycees who sponsor the event.
W W Warren of Haskell announced this week that he will open an exclusive women and children's shoes store in the former Family Shoe Store building. The shop, Warrens Booterie, will be run by Warren himself and open as soon as fixtures and merchandise arrive.
Mr and Mrs E E Yates came back Sunday after a week visiting Ruidoso and Las Cruces in New Mexico.
Stamford merchants plan the inaugural Stam ford Day on September 7 a first Friday monthly event by the Chamber of Commerce featuring fall shopping themes tall fashions and special bargains. shoppers are urged to come early stay late and enjoy a Bulldog stadium football game that night between the Haskell Indians and the Stamford Bulldogs.
