A census taker lists an array of surnames and place names in Stamford that reads like a quirky word game. From Lockes and Keeses to Greens and Browns, the roster spans plants, colors, animals, and noble titles, with many puns and coincidences across the town.
About 100 Stamford business men join the Dallas goodwill ambassadors for a chuck wagon breakfast hosted by the Texas Cowboy Reunion and Stamford Chamber of Commerce at the Reunion grounds Friday morning. The Dallas party includes 75 businessmen and 25 entertainers. The train arrives at 7 15 a.m. and the program on the square starts at 8 15 a.m. Public attendance is invited and the visitors will tour Stamford businesses before the train departs at 9 a.m.
Mrs. Lloyd Browne won the driving prize with Mrs. George Zachary as runner up in the Stamford Country Club event held Tuesday afternoon. Twenty two contestants joined the competition and Mrs. Dean Culp captured bogey tournament, Miss Dora Rothman low score, and Mrs. J. V. Rowan high score. Previous week winners included Mrs. FE. W. Hardwick blind bogey and Mrs. H. D. Britain high score. A ring-in tournament opened for this week closes Tuesday April 30 with entry two shillings. all women welcome regardless of club membership.
Three members of the Business and Professional Women's Club staged an entertaining program for the Exchange Club last Friday. Miss Olive McDougle led questions with Mrs. George Gray and Mrs. Charles Turbeville assisting. Members answered for pieces of silver candy. The silver tea is slated for May 9 at the Will Rogers Memorial Bunkhouse. Three visitors Owen Thomas J Carlton Smith and Oliver Crump attended.
On the second Sunday each month at 11 and 2 30 p.m. the Land Mark Baptist at Hasting school will hold services announced by R Z Guthrie. On the fourth Sunday monthly the Church of Christ will meet at 2 30 p.m. The first service is April 28.
Pleasant Valley will present a free 4 play titled So you Cinderella on Thursday night May 2. Mrs Alma Garrett directs the production with cast members including Mrs Ruth Carlton Mrs Bert Carlton Mrs Tressie Davis Mrs Fai Belle Sconce Mrs Hazel Strand Mrs Valena Eidson and Mrs May Schoonmaker.
Mrs. E F Lyons of Dallas, executive secretary of the Baptist W M U, will conduct an all day school of instruction at the First Baptist Church on Wednesday May 1. Women from Hodges Leeders Tuxedo Avoca New Hope and Hawley are invited to join. The book Things We Should Know will be taught. A special song by Mrs H C Michael in the morning and an organ piece by Mrs W B Tayman in the afternoon. A devotional period will be held. Attendance is expected to reach 75 to 100 women. The morning session opens at 10 o clock.
Two Stamford High School teams debated socialized medicine at a Rotary Club luncheon. Affirmative speakers were Kenneth Keaton and Ruth Williams, negative speakers Leon Williams and Jackie Hansen, with Mrs. Jewel Austin presiding. District conference delegates were named for Sweetwater.

West Texas Chamber of Commerce managers select Stamford for their fourth annual convention to be held in 1941. James C. Netts of Del Rio named president with Bill Collyns of Midland as former leader, Jerry Debenport of Odessa as vice president, and Jack Helton of Colorado as secretary treasurer. The Texas Cowboy Reunion dates July 2 to 4 drew special attention at the luncheon. Stamford’s Charlie Green and Mrs. Steve Bennett attended, with over 60 people present.

Walter Treidel, a German immigrant to Stamford for 22 years, will speak on Germany for the Senior League at St. John’s Methodist Church Sunday evening at 6 45. The public is invited. New officers were elected: Janice Baird president, Kenneth Keeton vice president, L E Loveless secretary, Gweneth Flemins treasurer, Joe Latti more reporter. Wanda Write will discuss the Youth Crusade at the District League meeting in Aspermont on the weekend.
Adolph Johnson sustained a broken heel and back injuries from a fall at the Stamford Mill and Elevator Company on Monday. He received care at Stamford Senetram and has returned home.
Col. R. L. Penick recalls the Gentry dog and pony show staging on Stamford square before the first city hall. He details ground talks, ground preparation by local firms, and a park plan drawn on wrapping paper later blueprinted. Brewington secured $10 000 for center ground, funding helped pay for the new city hall.
L E Loveless bought Dodson Motor Company old siding on North Swenson avenue from R B Spencer and Company and will move Auto Spring and Supply Company there around June 1. Remodeling started Wednesday to a modern front with white stucco brick and black glass trim. The interior will be split, with one half for Loveless and the other half for rent, Elmer Davis supervising.
Robert Helm aged 68 died of a cerebral hemorrhage at his son's home near Lueders. Funeral at St. Pauls Lutheran Lager ton conducted by Rev A H Muehlbradh. Burial in Highland cemetery Stamford. Survivors include wife five daughters and four sons. Kinney Funeral Home directed. He moved from Gatesville to Jones County in February. Born September 8, 1871 in Texas.
Drilling continues on the S. B. Roberts No 1 Pardue estate north outpost near the Pardue pool northeast of Stamford in Haskell county. Depth 2566 70 feet with test swab planned and pump to follow for production appraisal. Other wells, including J F Farrell No 1 Reid and Iron Mountain No 1 Wiley, are drilling at various depths with tests anticipated.
Clover Farm Longhorn Division operators and wives attended a banquet at the Stamford Inn where two contests crackers and coffee awarded prizes. About 60 guests heard a recorded short wave program from Cleveland executives. George P. Simms of Seymour won top cracker and coffee prizes with H L Chambers of Rule also placing.
Four Stamford High School girls, winners in the Future Home Makers Club, will attend the 21st annual State Rally in Dallas with Miss Ethel Rowell. Representatives include Buena Peckham, Doris Rosenwasser, Jean Brownfield, and Margaret Boston. awards were announced after a Friday night style show.
The Stamford High School pep squad will form a drill team of eight girls next season led by sponsor and director Mrs. Lee Walker. Members named include Jean Brownfield Annette Carothers Nancy Beth Harrison Mary Bryan Jane McDonald Betty Jo Summers Virginia Tayman and Estelle McReynolds. Seven girls were elected to pep squad membership to fill vacancies and substitutes were chosen from a list of twenty.
The Wahanka Camp Fire group held a regular session and elected officers Leemore Fuqua as president Vesta Ferrell as vice president Peggy Harbert as secretary treasurer Mary Frances Ferrell as reporter and Paula MacVaden as song leader A report on cleanup and planting flowers was given and the group begins a new year this month.
Tinsley performed a piano piece while Patsy Park presented a reading titled Ballad of Culinary Frustration, showcasing a mixed program at the community arts venue.
C M Francis won the Stamford mayoral race with 504 votes to 445 for Cleburne Huston in a 950 ballot election. One ballot was discarded, making this the largest mayoral vote in Stamford history, though the 1935 police race drew 1,005 votes. Officials will conduct the canvass at the next city council meeting.
One hundred five Boy Scouts from five Stamford district troops met at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds for a two day camporee. Rev. Wm. F. Rogan led a Sunday morning sermon closing the event. Merit badges and rank advances were awarded at a Saturday Court of Honor led by Rogan.
The Stam ford High School Junior class will host its annual seniors banquet Friday night at the home economics cottage. Committees were appointed for decorations place cards program invitation and menu with named juniors leading each task.
Cream Parlor Improved Tom's Ice Cream parlor on East Hamilton Street has been repainted this week. The interior and front door awning and front have been refinished in white. The interior of the building has also been renovated.
Mrs Swenson Davie was elected president of the Business and Professional Women's Club at the Inn Th last week. Mrs Davis will serve as president for the 1940 41 season, succeeding Mrs J G High. Other officers elected include Mrs Ethel Haile as vice president and Miss Lois Green recording secretary.
Mrs. L. S. Furrh of the Southwestern Writers Club of America has two poems, The Hand of God and Life, included in the anthology Important American Poets. About 700 poets are represented in the volume from roughly 10 000 submitted. She donated a copy of the anthology to the Carnegie Library.
