The Stamford Country Club hosts its third annual invitation golf tournament May 9 to 12 with about 100 top West Texas players. A Thursday barbecue and Calcutta pool precede finals on May 12. entry is $2 with medals awarded in each flight.
Stamford welcomed twenty five Dallas entertainers during a Friday visit. Judge C E Coombes gave the official welcome while J Ben Critz of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce served as master of ceremonies. Texas Cowboy Reunion and Stamford Chamber of Commerce hosted a chuck wagon breakfast at the Will Rogers Memorial Bunkhouse with Has kell Hamlin Anson and Lueders guests.
Mrs O F Seth will present her piano pupils in a recital at the Lueders school auditorium on Friday May 10 at 8 o clock. Pupils include Dorothea Dell Mitchell Monte La Velle Smart Mary Louise Mc Duff Jean Cobb Eulie Lee Bunkley Doris Bunkley Lydia Ellen Cobb Bobbie Jane Webb and others. The grammar school recital features a Fairy Play and Mary Louise McDuff will read. Public invited.
The Wichita Valley Railroad held its annual directors meeting at J. C. Bryant's office. Attendees included Gen. John A. Hulen vice president, D. Peckenpaugh general manager, W. C. Hamilton treasurer, W. C. Logan general auditor, C. S. Edmonds general freight agent, and Gen. Hulen's secretary, all from Fort Worth, plus Mr. Bryant from Stamford.
Stamford church-goers were startled by a brief shower of rain and hail around 11:30 Sunday morning. The rain totaled .29 inch with light hail, causing no damage. Spotted showers in the Stamford area varied from a quarter to two inches.
Big Spring hosts the West Texas Chamber of Commerce annual session May 16 to 18 with plans for an All-Youth Parade featuring 1000 Boy Scouts 4-H and Future Farmers of America. Miss West Texas 1940 contest winner announced. 60 piece Scarlet Cadets band to perform. scholarships offered by nine West Texas schools.
Mrs W B Tayman chosen as hostess to sponsors for the Texas Cowboy Reunion to be held July 2 3 and 4. H G Andrews chairman announced. Tayman selected by reunion directors. Stamford reveals Eilah Blan Elliott named Stamford sponsor by Chamber of Commerce weeks earlier.
The Business and Professional Women's Club hosts a fashion parade and silver tea at the Will Rovers Memorial Bunkhouse on May 9. Models span the Gay 90s to 1940s with music by Miss Maxine Rowland and Mrs Parker Gardner. Notables include Vera Steely, Ann Acuff, and Lula B. Richards. Stamford High School students model nine dresses. The event concludes with a 1940s Leap Year Bride finale and a reception by officers.
The First Baptist Woman's Missionary Union met in an all day session at the church with Mrs. E. F. Lyon of Dallas as state executive secretary. Mrs. C. R. Sims presided and welcomed Mrs. M. Lester who spoke on Things I Know. Lunch for about 50 attendees was served.
The Stamford High School sextet performed for the Exchange Club at the Stamford Inn last Friday. Members include Virginia Tayman Halcyon Stagner Nancy Laneford Janice Baird Filah Alan Elliott and Wanda White with Martha McClellan as accompanist and Miss Maxine Rowland directing. Four numbers were presented. Tinsley presided and named Dr Ike Hudson and Dr Joe Rutherford as May program committee. Attendance contest tied. the winning side will supply fish for a supper when wives attend. Visitors Charlie Green and Hollis Hughes joined the meeting.
The Chamber of Commerce office asks residents to call the census number if not yet enumerated or if they know someone missed in the count. Officials stress the 10 year population basis for Stamford and note many calls followed last week's announcement.
In an interview Col. R. L. Penick recalls Stamford’s early water crisis. He describes Water Lee hauling gallons, Lake Nos. 3 to 5, and shuttle trains delivering water, the 1917 transfer of Water Works to town control, and fighting a costly supply rate amid wartime railroad controls.
The Stamford Public Schools will close on May 28 with graduation exercises for the senior class on Tuesday evening. Baccalaureate services for the graduating class are scheduled for Sunday evening, May 26.
The PTA operetta Cinderella in Flower land will be staged Friday night at the high school auditorium by about 80 Stamford children under Mrs. Alton Hollis. Dress rehearsal is Thursday night. Proceeds benefit the Parent-Teachers Association. Admission 25 and 15 cents. Lois Caldwell stars as Cinderella with Monte Knutson as the prince. The cast includes Mary Nell Daughtry Peggy Sitton and many others in flower and fairy character roles.
Mrs. R. L. Haynie presented a review of The Waiting Room by Helen Irvin Oehler at a Picrian Club guest-day in the home economics cottage. Fine Arts Club contributed numbers while Mrs. Bart Holland presided and Mrs. H. C. Michael led the program.
Humble Oil and Refining Company tentatively locates on the J. E. McCowan tract to extend the Ivy pool northeast. A Palo Pinto lime test will drill as an east offset to West-Honea No. 1 Martin, first operation for the Ivy Pool by the company, delayed by title trouble. In the same pool Owen-Snebold Oil Corporation acids wells to boost recovery. nearby three and a half miles east of Stamford K. B. Nowels No. 1 Purdue area is drilling 2690 feet toward Palo Pinto lime northwest extension with two more tests planned. Iron Mountain Oil No. 1 Wiley southwest of Stamford was abandoned at 4023 feet with no production. Farrell No. 1 Reid southwest of Stamford tested eight barrels oil natural from Gunsight sandy lime. operators acidized with 1000 gallons of acid, then swabbed 55 barrels oil overnight after placing 100 barrels for acid purposes.
C W Wright, longtime cashier at the Wichita Valley railroad, is promoted to agent at Seymour and departed Thursday to begin new duties. He has 25 years with the company and eight years in Seymour area, moving from Petrolia to Stam ford. T D McKinney of Jayton acts as cashier in Stamford office until replacement is chosen. Mrs Wright and the children will stay behind until after school ends.
The Professional and Service Division of the Works Progress Administration will celebrate This Work Pays Your Community week in Jones County May 20 to 25 with a Kick-Off night May 20 at the Will Rogers Memorial Bunkhouse Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds. District manager J O Jones of Lubbock and district supervisor Evelyn M Richter outline goals and current projects.
Mrs. Tom Johnston Mrs. J W Sowell and Mrs Joe Dick Giddens were among attendees at a midweek gathering. Approximately 50 members and guests were present for the occasion in a cordial social setting.
Stamford prepares to host the Texas Private Fliers Association meeting on May 11 and 12 with aviation events barbecue and a dance planned. Prominent officials Roy Arledge Ralph DeVore and Leslie Bowman endorse the gathering expected to attract pilots from Texas Oklahoma New Mexico and neighboring states. An aviation exhibit and cross country flights from Randolph and Kelly fields are discussed to boost Stamford publicity.
Stamford men participate in the District Rotary Convention at Sweetwater, with Rev. Dick O'Brien speaking at the assembly. Warren B Tayman leads on the international program and heads fundraising for a gift for district governor Hiram Arrant to fund a Havana trip for the International Convention.
The W M A of the First Baptist Church will hold its regular monthly business meeting at the church Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
Miss Dora Rothman was low scorer in the women’s ring-in event, with Mrs A C Humphrey high score and Mrs H D Britain a valuable score. In the driving contest Tuesday afternoon, Mrs Dean Culp won and Mrs Ike Hudson was second. A new blind bogey tournament will close Saturday night due to the invitation event at the Country Club next week. All women are invited to enter. Entrance fee is.
H Varnell of Abilene spoke to the Stamford Rotary Club at the Inn about soil conservation districts and watersheds of California Creek, noting a May 25 vote and outlining general conservation benefits. The program was led by J M Bird with J L Hill in charge and Frank Ramey acting president. A guest from Abilene and several Stamford Rotarians attended plus district staff. Family reunions and travel plans followed the meeting as Corrigan relatives planned a Detroit visit after a Stamford stay.
