Tom Johnston district superintendent for the Methodist church spoke at the Stamford Rotary Club at noon Tuesday. He drew on Jacinto Day to review the early history of the church in Texas, with F. E. Upshaw introducing the speaker.
Officers of the Rod and Gun Club were elected Tuesday night at the annual stockholders meeting. George Flournoy was re elected president, H B Lawhon vice president, and Clay Markham secretary treasurer. Directors named were Flournoy Lawhon J K Brady W B Tayman and George Gray.
Clover Farm Store owners of the Longhorn Division held a banquet at the Stamford Inn on Wednesday night. Sixty persons attended as R A Gill acted as toastmaster and W F Cawyer from Abilene welcomed guests. Delegations from district stores were presented by Gill and speakers included Marvin Doss, Jimmy Beal, Ross Adams, and Frank Jedman.
Mrs. Lee Rogers and Mrs. Tobe Kuenstler, longtime Texas Cafe owners, bought the Stamford Coffee Shop from John Ro Martin and took charge Tuesday midnight. The Texas Cafe will be discontinued, while the Stamford shop will operate 24 hours. Mr. Martin plans to move to Houston after May 1.
Jean Brownfield Mary Jean Yates and Annette Carothers elected yell leaders for the High school pep squad for the fall season. Officers selected include Doris Rosenwasser president Nellie Jean Rucker vice president Barbara Ricks secretary Peggy Tinsley treasurer Sarah McDonald sergeant at arms and Katherine Spencer reporter. Five vacancies remain after try outs with eliminations set next week.
Illness in the east forces postponement of Hansel and Gretel. The final PTA meeting moves to Wednesday April 30 at 7 30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Mrs L L Johns, president, announces new officers will be installed then.
Mr and Mrs Bob McClendon and sons of Elgin spent last weekend here with Mr and Mrs Jack Mc Clendon and sons and Mr and Mrs H B Lawhon and daughter.
Work started Tuesday to widen and grade the west side road by Arledge Field and to gravel a loop connecting with the highway at two points. Commissioner Joel V. Grimes leads the WPA funded effort. The 55 foot wide road will include a 16 foot caliche bed and use 25 feet donated from the field.
Bob Kinard and Eugene Swenson senior boys doubles from Stamford High School won the Abilene regional and earn a state meet berth in Austin May 2 and 3. They beat Ballinger 6-2 6-4 6-2 after earlier defeats of Breckenridge and Ballinger, with T R Tinsley as coach. Dan Langford and Charles Green lost in district play.
First National Bank is remodeling its building to a modern citified appearance. Thomas Fixture Company of Dallas handles the project with removal of heavy fixtures and steel bars, repainting, new fluorescent lighting, inlaid flooring, and repainted oak facings for a lighter effect. Completion is expected in about two weeks after starting over the San Jacinto Day holiday.
Boy Scouts of Troop No 40 with Scoutmaster F W Pauling held a weekend camp at Flat Top last week. Activities ran on a patrol basis. The camp opened Saturday morning and closed after lunch Sunday. Contests in knot tying fire building and other events occurred Saturday and a Sunday morning hike followed. About 25 boys attended.
Mrs. Ted Miles, Sunnyside School principal, and Miss Ophelia Henson, primary teacher, have been re-elected. The school board includes George Moore, Homer Hardy, and Rody Shanafelt. A program by teachers and pupils is set for May 23 at close of school.
Formal opening of Lou Foote Flying School at Arledge Field moved to May 17 and 18 due to Mother's Day. Invitations go to Army Air Corps officers and officials from Randolph, Kelly Fields, Gulf Coast Area, and Washington. Brig Gen Brant aims to have many Air Corps aircraft on Sunday for inspection.
B. E. Needles is erecting a new $6,000 store building in Stamford east of Surprise Furniture on West Moran Street. The 65 by 66 foot concrete block structure will be plastered white with a 2 foot drive in door for service and large steel framed front windows. Weaver Medlin designed the plans and Lawrence Crider holds the construction contract.
A flower basket theme will mark the annual high school junior senior banquet at the home economics cottage on Thursday night April 24. Miss Margaret Crockett Elmer Oatman and L W Johnson will speak on roses and youth, with Jean Brownfield presiding and the senior and sophomore class presidents also speaking. Music will be provided by Nellie Jean Rucker and Henrietta Tsuji, and the group will sing God Bless America and Singing Glory to the Blue. The junior class has 84 members and the senior class 105.
Jerry Debenport of Odessa was elected president of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce Managers Association at its conv ention in Olney. Ollie Clarke became vice president and Charlie Green secretary treasurer as 65 registered attendees heard talks on redistricting and a fiscal control plan for Texas finances.
Oliver Crump's Eating Place undergoes a remodeling of the Wallace building with new floors, white walls, and modernized fixtures. The Club Cafe will reopen in about ten days in a retooled space. The center will house Terminal Garage and Mickler Produce. the south side remains vacant. The Crumps sold their home on West Oliver and moved to 107 Elreot Oliver Street amid moving day activity.
The Stamford square dance team will travel Sunday or Monday to Washington D C to join the National Folk Festival on May 1 2 and 3. They perform square dances demonstrate old fashioned dances and promote the Texas Cowboy Reunion with literature and car stickers. The group includes Cecil Gray Lawrence Crider Joe Benton Lou Williams and John Braswell with mascots Fannie Williams Louise Crider and Joan Gray. They may follow with radio appearances before returning for the West Texas Chamber of Commerce banquet May 15.
The Business and Professional Women's Club reports Easter seals sales total 74 dollars with ten members yet to report. Mrs Swenson Davis presided as president and nominations were set for next year's officers. The club plans to continue beautifying a park in the eastern city and welcomed new member Miss Katie Lee Clements.
R B Buie owns a new 25 by 100 foot building on West McHarg between Arledge Ice Company display room and Stamford Sales Company used car lot. The limestone front with plate windows is nearly done. concrete block walls remain. Lawrence Crider holds the contract.
Several Stamford women attend the Methodist Northwest Texas Conference of Woman's Society of Christian Service in Abilene from Wednesday to Friday. Mrs. J. H. Rutherford of Stamford serves as conference vice president and Mrs. Jack Jones, Stamford local president, is a delegate. Others attending include Mmes. Billy Bryant, W. D. Duble, J. B. Dodson and J. A. Smith.
Humphrey Hardware announces two new employees Miss Mary Caudle of Avoca and Travis Rash formerly with Doubit Gin. Caudle began work Wednesday of last week and Rash started Saturday. Mrs Archer Yarbro, long time employee, left Saturday night to join her husband in Coleman.
Mrs Lee Walker has been chosen as official hostess for the Texas Cowboy Reunion. She will be assisted by Betty Jane Blackwell Stamford's sponsor in entertaining visiting sponsors during the Reunion. She is the wife of Stamford High School football coach and active in civic affairs serving as Pierian Club president and pep squad sponsor.
The Methodist Young People’s tally targets April 26 and 27 at St Johns Methodist Church. Opening Saturday at 5 p m, the gathering closes Sunday with a consecration led by Revenneth Copeland of Haskell. Dr Frank Turner of McMurry College speaks Sunday morning. Conference officers Darris Egger Lena Katherin Morrison Leonore Lengine attend. The Monday program features a play Hands Must Obey chaired by Trene Stewart district director.
Exchange Club heard a plan for Southwest Feeder Airlines to create a long distance feeder air network across Texas and adjacent states. The route would serve 59 military installations, carry passengers at four cents a mile, and include field leases and local personnel, aiming to begin by October 1941. Guests included Roy Stokes of Sweetwater.
Stamford cub scouts hold their monthly pack meeting Thursday night April 24 at St. John's Methodist church. Den dad W. Z. Vaden will lead the session with the theme Collections as cubs exhibit varied collections.
The Avoca High School junior class will stage a three act comedy titled Pigtails at 8 pm in the school gym Tuesday April 29. Admission is 10 and 20 cents.
City announces free trash haul starting Tuesday morning after a home clean-up drive. Citizens should not mix tree branches or grass with trash. City manager Charlie Green urged trimming overhanging branches to seven feet and urged merchants to improve fronts and alleys.
Joe H. Brown of Abilene with the Surplus Marketing Administration is establishing the Food Stamp Plan in the county. He and County Judge Gilbert Smith visited Stamford Thursday. The program starts May 15 with Billie R. Dearley overseeing the issuing office and Mrs. Madge Richards as certifying agent. Mobile units will operate in Hamlin and Stamford on designated days.
Plans are laid for National Music Week opening May 4 with local arrangements led by Mrs. W. D. Doble. The Stamford Music Club sets a May 3 breakfast at the Stamford Inn and May 6 tea at Mrs. C. M. New officers will be installed later. Members may invite guests.
Andrew Jackson Houston the 86 year old son of General Sam Houston was appointed Monday as United States Senator from Texas and is a great-uncle of Mrs W Carl Clement of Stamford. Clement’s grandmother was Houston’s oldest daughter and 9th sister of the newly appointed senator. Houston is an uncle of Mrs R E McDonald of Lubbock who formerly lived here. McDonald’s mother, who died here years ago, was a sister of A J Houston.
Mrs. Byron Lewis Mrs. V D Duble and Mrs. R R Baird come back from Dallas after attending the annual convention of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs.
