Jones County Boy Scouts postpone their spring Cammoree by one week per field executive Jack Vogel. The event will now be held May 10 due to scoutmaster preparation needs and episodes of wet weather making camping impractical.
The Brazos Valley Postal Employees Association met in Goree High School auditorium on Monday night April 28. President Lee Hayrz es presided with Postmaster Lee Norman guiding the program. Ian Matheny reported on the McAllen postmasters convention. Next meeting at Muncay with Mrs Matheny leading. Annual banquet planned for Haskell Monday evening June 25. Twenty four members and visitors shared angel food cake and coffee. Offices represented included Aspermont Old Glory Lagerton Rule Jayton Haskell Monday Weinert Rochester Knox City Seymour and Goree.
John L. Herschbach and E. Fred Herschbach, formerly with Ajex Drilling, join J. T. McCulloch to form the Herschbach Mc Culloch Drilling Co. They will offer rotary and cable tool operations in West Texas and New Mexico with headquarters in Dallas. J T McCulloch and family have bought the Glenn Williams home in Abilene.
The Elite Beauty Shop has installed a new Realistic permanent waving machine.
A mass meeting to detail the Food Stamp Plan for Jones County will be held at the High School auditorium next Wednesday night May 7. Joe H. Brown of the Surplus Marketing Administration announces the program sponsored by the county and the cities of Hamlin Anson and Stamford.
George Rollins topped 27 qualifiers to medal with 71 as first round matches begin. Rain slows play. Rollins defeats Clyde Westfall 5 and 4 while Pudley Raines, defending champion, opens with Russell Crownover in a crowded field of early results.
Mrs. Stella Galey aged 69 died Tuesday at Edgewood at the home of her daughter Mrs. R V Taylor after visiting since September. The body was taken to Lorenzo for burial with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. funeral services were held at the Lorenzo Methodist Church. She was born August 1872 and married R M Galey in 1889, who died in 1933. Survivors include five sons Homer Hershel Haskell Paul R V and R V Taylor and three daughters 18 grandchildren four sisters and five brothers.
The Auxiliary of the Central Presbyterian church sewed for war relief with the American Red Cross Monday. Caps and garments totaling twenty five were finished. Mrs. L. M. York hosted the meeting with refreshments, and many town women attended.
The document outlines a monthly rate of 36 per member for orange stamps and a free blue surplus stamp equal to 50 percent of the orange stamp value for WPA employed cases. Clients may buy stamps twice monthly in installments and those with low or no pay may participate under Surplus Marketing Administration Regu lar Instructions No. 8, Jan 2 1941.
Mr and Mrs Oliver Smith start a five room frame home on 915 Wells avenue east of the J B Sloan property with a double garage and built in features. J E Reed holds the contract and expects occupancy in about three months.
Complete plans for the two day Lou Foot Flying School opening will be announced at the Chamber of Commerce breakfast on May 7. The Stamford Inn hosts the event from 7 30 to 8 30 am with the Aviation Committee in charge of the program.
Geo. Harper, area supervisor for the State Department of Public Welfare, told the Stamford Exchange Club that Jones County currently has 550 citizens on old age assistance. He outlined three welfare areas: child welfare, county workers and old age assistance, detailing eligibility rules and the role of county staff in relief, WPA and CCC matters.
The final lyceum program of the season will be presented at Stamford High School on May 6. mystery entertainers Schietz and Company will perform.
State and district officers of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs will join Stamford Music Club for its May breakfast the day before National Music Week. Grace Sloan of Fort Worth leads First District Federated Music Clubs with other officers attending. The club will perform six times during the week and install new officers at a Tuesday tea. The group also screens Sporting Blood at State Theater midweek and plans church music recognitions.
Stamford received nearly an inch of rain from Saturday through Monday night. Drizzle and light showers on Saturday measured .78 inch, with an additional .17 inch from Monday into Monday night. Tuesday of last week added .23 inch.
The Jones courts Roy Scout Court of Honor was held at Flat Top school north of Hamlin. Reginald Baird led the event with C. D. Hopkins Byron Lewis and Burl McClellan assisting. Troop 42 Stamford produced three life scouts Kindred Muse Robert McNabb Charles Sorrell. Other badges went to Arnold Braun Paul Schoenerstedt and several from Troop 22 Anson and Troop 54 Hamlin with multiple merit badges earned.
W L Hills of Rule died from head injuries after an automobile wreck south of Haskell. Funeral held Saturday. survivors include widow Frances Jones Hills two daughters Mildred Lou and Nancy Hills, brothers Walter Oliver Hills and Rayford Hills, sister Miss Lou Hilly and mother. Hills was a Rule merchant and brother of Rayford Hills of Lubbock.
About 50 to 55 Army Air Corps cadets will train at Arledge Field as the Lou Foote Flying School expands with a second hangar. Concrete work will start soon. a steel structure from Oklahoma City will rise north of the existing hangar. Cadets from Kansas and nearby states arrive. class begins Saturday. 23 of 47 cadets who arrived earlier washed out. trainer fears but presses on amid rain and mud injuries.
Stamford square dance team departs Sunday for Washington D C to participate in the National Folk Festival running Thursday through Saturday. The group aims to showcase oldtime square dances and promote Texas Cowboy Reunion, carrying patriotic banners and cowboy regalia. Members include Cecil and Mary Gray, Lawrence Crider, Joe and Mary Benton, Lou Williams, John Braswell, with Fannie Williams, Mrs. Braswell, Louise Crider, and Joan Gray as escorts and mascots.
Six senior piano pupils of Mrs. C. M. Lester will join an evening of Piano Ensemble music on May 8 at John Tarleton College Stephenville. Donald Morton directs the Tarleton Music Faculty ensemble with 18 pianos and 36 performers in the climactic number. Stamford students include Gweneth Flemins Martha McClellan Jamie Chandler Bobby Lou Smith Betty Jo Summers and Ann Bunkley. The same six will present a spring recital and perform more ensemble music later.
Honey Bernard Adams received a safety certificate and a Nations Safety Council button from High Way Insurance Underwriter for four years of continuous commercial driving and about 250000 miles without an accident while employed by A. T. Jackson Truck Lines.
More than one hundred Methodist young people attended a two day rally at St. John's Methodist Church in Stamford. Miss Irene Stewart led activities with a supper program featuring Nancy Laneford Janice Baird Virginia Tayman Halcyon Stagner and others. A McMurry College band delivered a devotional and a Munday group presented Hands Must Obey. Sunday included a business meeting Sunday school led by Bernard Bryant and a morning sermon by Dr. Frank Turner followed by a consecration service conducted by Rev. Kenneth Copeland.
United States defense bonds went on sale at the Stamford post office Thursday. Postmaster R. C Thomas announced bonds may be bought in denominations as low as 25 and 40 dollars in Series FE and up to 10 000 dollars in Series 6. Postal saving stamps may also be purchased to save toward bonds.
Miss Gladys Davis presented on Sulhon thevlithiazule a new drug for treating Staphylococcus infections while Miss Mildred Wiegreffe spoke on vitamins especially Vitamin B. The Stamford Sanitarium nurses home hosted the event with Mrs. Vincent Roach presiding at a business session. The group will back a State Theater show Dr Kildare's Crisis on May 14 and 15.
The Stamford Rotary Club approved a $25 donation to the Rotary International war relief fund. Delegates elected to the district conference at Lubbock May 11 12 13 include Frank B. Ramey and C. T. Dodson. Jack Vogel urged Scout work and was introduced by R. R. Baird noting 300 Scouts in 20 troops.
Telegram from Representative H. B. Fitzgerald dated April 29 reports House Bill 8 passed and appropriates 24 million dollars with 1.75 million per month allocated to old age pensions. The American notes the funding structure and monthly distribution for pensions.
Jones County farmers learn parity payments for 1941 under the AAA program. Parity rates are 130 cents per pound for cotton and 150 cents per bushel for wheat, with eligibility tied to farming within allotted acreages. Conservation payments and other program details are outlined by C H Young, AAA committee chairman.
Stamford High School selects three girls Edwina Pendleton Martha Beth Larche and Pustejovsky and one boy Marvin Harvey to attend the state home making rally in San Antonio April 30 to May 3. Mrs. H. K. Langford will accompany the group touring Austin and San Antonio sites.
Rev and Mrs W H Griswold left Tuesday for St Louis Missouri to attend the 60th annual international convention of the Disciples of Christ. A St Louis church invited Rev Griswold to preach Sunday morning before the journey continues to Chicago for a brief visit with his parents. They expect to be away two Sundays with no services at Central Christian Church Sunday announcements for the following week.
Jones County peanut growers approved marketing quotas for 1941 142 and 943 by a large margin. The county vote shows 53 in favor and 10 against from 63 ballots, aligning with national results as the plan creates a marketing year for the forthcoming crop.
