Rotarians Mark 50th Anniversary Of Stamford Club

Rotarians and their wives gathered in Stamford to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stamford Rotary Club. Ray Kinney oversaw the banquet and paid tribute to founders while District and past leaders attended. Cleburne Huston presented a club history. entertainment featured The Free Spirit and Stamford High School performers.

Farmers Co op Gin stockholders to meet April 26

The annual meeting of the Farmers Co op Gin stockholders will be April 26 with dinner at 6 p.m. in the Stamford High School Cafeteria and Auditorium. Kenneth Wolf will be guest speaker for the meeting. Earnings will be distributed and reports given during the business session.

Stamford Council Advances City Projects and Appointments

In a brief session Stamford council approved election returns, second readings, and appointed officials including Councilmen Fareed Hassen C L Cromwell and Police Chief B Q Cooper. An air conditioner replacement and roof insulation were approved with bids to be opened May 7. Charles Condy Day was proclaimed for April 17.

Rains Bring Drought Area Some Relief But Still Behind

Drought battered area welcomes weekend rains of 2.74 inches over three days. Surface moisture improves but area remains two inches below normal for the year. wheat crop damaged while maize and grazers get an early start. Lake Stamford’s level remains low at 31,600 acre feet. 1971 rainfall totals sit at 3.34 inches with 5.59 inch normal.

Women’s Forum Plans Spring House to House Cancer Drive

The Jones County Chapter of the American Cancer Society will conduct a house to house canvass Tuesday April 27 with four Stamford women's clubs coordinating from Central Presbyterian Church at 4 PM. Mrs James H West says volunteers will receive literature for distribution and Al Berry outlines county efforts to fight cancer. Mayor James Self issued a proclamation urging April as cancer month and civic support through early detection and treatment.

Fish Kill Planned For College Lake

City manager H R Macomber says a fish kill will occur at College Lake on April 23 at 9 am to render the lake safe for restocking. Residents may collect drifting fish with tow sacks as boats are banned. If rain delays, the event moves to 9 am April 26.

Two Men Jailed After Guilty In District Court

Two men were found guilty of driving while intoxicated before District Judge J. Neil Daniel. L. H. Goodman of Abilene received 30 days in jail and a $300 fine for two misdemeanor DWI counts. D. E. Koonce of Hamlin was convicted of a felony second offense DWI, sentenced to 10 days in jail and fined $250 plus costs, with 10 days jail credit and release after trial.

Bulldog Band Excels at Wichita Falls Festival

The Bulldog Band earned an excellent rating at the Notre Dame Band Festival in Wichita Falls, competing in class AA. UIL contest remains set for Tuesday, April 27, at Cooper High School in Abilene. Next trips include Six Flags Over Texas on May 1 and a Senior concert on May 4.

Two to Attend Boys State on UT Campus

Robert Gillespie and Richard Longley will attend Boys State at the University of Texas Austin campus from June 5 to 12. Sponsored by the American Legion, the program teaches state government with Gillespie sponsored by the Rotary Club and Longley by the Legion.

Three Stamford Girls Named for Bluebonnet Girls State

Three Stamford High School juniors are chosen to attend Bluebonnet Girls State at Seguin from June 15 to 25. Sponsored by community groups, Beth Haynes, Vicki Nauert and Patti Fuqua will study state government and civic leadership.
