Safeway opens a Stamford supermarket April 19 with five new staffers including assistant manager C P Hendrix from Abilene. D C Field Jimmie Mitchell and FF BL Johnson transfer from Coleman and Bob Goforth joins as journeyman meat cutter from Big Spring. The store, costing about 120000, will feature modern equipment as Wayland Fuqua notes, with 14 existing workers and four part timers.

Volleyball Champs Fall to Ballinger in Bi-district
The Stamford District 7-AA girls volleyball squad lost to Ballinger in a bi-district contest in Abilene on April 6. Ballinger won 15-8 and 15-0. Olga Alvarez led Stamford with four points as Ballinger advances to the regional in Lubbock.

Funeral services for Dr J H Rutherford 97 were conducted April 12 at St John s United Methodist Church with Rev Jarrell Sharp officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery. he died Sunday at Stamford Inn after living there since 1965. He was born January 3 1874 in Vandalia Illinois.

Stamford Memorial Hospital reports a 1970 profit of 46 728 and rising 1971 records. Occupancy hit 50 beds with 55 patients at times. January 40, February 42 average. Administrator John Martin spoke to Rotarians on district boundaries, possible elections, and a future tax rate drop to 12–15 cents.

Funeral Rites Held for E. V. Chastain in Stamford
E. V. Shorty Chastain, 73, a longtime Stamford grocer, was laid to rest Monday at Kinney Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Garry Worden officiating. He died Saturday at Hamlin Hospital after a march 31 illness. Born July 31, 1897 in Fannin County he moved to Stamford in 1920 and married Nettye Grubbs in 1930. Survivors include his wife three daughters two in Del Rio one in Baytown six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
