Stamford High School presents a combined concert in the High School Auditorium on Tuesday evening May 4 at 7 30. The 6th Grade Band Junior High Band and Senior High Band will perform with seniors from both groups introduced. A new fight song by Forest Fountain will debut as the high school band performs.
Coronado High School tracksters led by Andy Young and Robert Stevenson tied the state record in the 440 yard relay with Matt Selmon and Rick Medford in a 49.9 finish at the Region I meet in Lubbock. Stevenson won the 100 yard dash in 9.8 seconds and Young dominated the last 90 yards of the 440 leg. The Bulldogs placed second overall behind Floydada and earned a state berth at Memorial Stadium in Austin on May 7.
Bethel Lutheran Church near Avoca will dedicate an official Texas Historical Marker on May 2. The cast aluminum marker notes the site acquired in 1906, sanctuary built 1932–41, andSweden‑Swenson sponsorship. It highlights local history including early Swedish migration and community developments.
Ted James leads 65 Bull dog Band members to Cooper High School Abilene for District 7 AA events. Sight reading earns superior while concert playing earns excellent. Hamlin also scores high. Stamford compares to second in district. Band trip to Ft Worth and Six Flags Over Texas planned with boosters funding.
Clay Markham Insurance sells to Upshaw and Upshaw after serving the Stamford area for over 20 years. Markham opened his first agency in 1948 above J. C. Penney. He has been at 113 N. Swenson for nearly 20 years. Sale becomes effective in May.
Stamford United Fund directors will elect officers Thursday morning at 7 then discuss fall drive plans. The Cliff House meeting will include civic club representatives while reports from secretary Mrs. Darryl Schoonmaker president Roy Craig and last year’s drive chairman Marvin Massey are read. Executive committee met last week and distributed checks to agencies though the $13,108 goal was not reached.
Stamford Schools twirlers performed Saturday April 24 at the Roscoe Twirling contest. Division I ratings went to Cathy Pritchard Lezli Brownfield Tammy Cox Vicky Nauert Jana Spitzer Sue Hammer Valerie Reber and Linda White. Division II ratings were earned by Kathleen Brinell Cynthia Wimberly Julie Reed Ann Oliver Deanna Richards Angie Thane. A trio of high school twirlers Tammy Cox Lezli Brownfield Cathy Pritchard and a trio of younger twirlers Sue Hammer Valerie Reber Linda White also received Division I. Susan Kinney and Tamara Bolding earned Division III ratings. All students studied under Miss Sue Eddington.
The West Central Baptist Association Rally of the Double Mountain Area will be at Calvary Baptist Church Stamford. Executive Board meets at 6 30 p m and the rally starts 7 p m with song service. Judge Leon Thurman of Anson is guest speaker. The Home in Today's World is the theme with talks on home pressures responsibilities and church roles.
Graduation ceremonies move to First Baptist Church from St. John’s United Methodist due to remodeling. The event will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, April 30, at the new venue.
Russ Baize will enter district competition in public speaking on May 4 in Hobbs. He aims to advance to state and may earn a scholarship. he also competes for District Star Chapter Farmer and is a nominee for district FIA president per vocational ag teacher Weldon Molbrooks.
The Farm Clubs ages 7 and 9 begin play April 29 at Wendeborn Field with the Astros versus Pirates at 6 p.m. and Jets versus Cubs at 7 30 p.m. The season continues May 4 with Dodgers at Braves and Red Sox at Cards. Mothers plan concessions to fund equipment and uniforms.
The Vocational Agriculture awards banquet will be held May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria and Auditorium. Weldon Holbrooks notes the event honors businessmen and farmers who aided the department. Over 250 invitations have been sent and about 225 are expected to attend. Star Greenhand and Star Chapter Farmer awards will be presented, with Billy Teichelman and Brent Boldin hosting and Debbie Riddle and Annette Brown named as Sweethearts.
The FFA dairy cattle judging team placed third at the regional meet in Lubbock earning a state bid to Texas A&M University on May 1. Senior Brad Glenn and sophomores Bo Jones and Stanley Acker form the team with Glenn finishing fourth overall and third in Holstein judging.
The Lueders Chamber of Commerce met April 22 at the Lions Club Building with President Marshall Wyatt presiding. Forty two members voted to invite women to join and participate. The group will furnish fish for the Lueders Day Fish Fry at Stamford Lake on the second Tuesday in May, and committees were named to study park improvements and missing road signs. The chamber will meet on the third Tuesday each month.
City Judge Raymond Holla-baugh reported three cases of minors in possession one drunk in public and one providing alcoholic beverages to minors in Corporation Court this week All five were first offenses.
Mayor James Self proclaims May 1 as Loyalty Day in Stamford at the request of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9179. The day is celebrated nationally as Americans reaffirm love of flag and country with urged flag display by businesses homes schools and churches.
In last Thursday’s high school gym tryouts, Leah Hargrove was named Drum Major for the High School Band and Debra Dobbins for the Junior High Band. High School twirlers selected include Cathy Pritchard Kath leen Brinell Vickie Nauert Tammy Cox and Lezli Brown with Junior High twirlers Vickie Gregory Renee Brownfield Julie Reed Ann Oliver Cynthia Wimberly and Jana Spitzer. Judges were three area band directors.
