Staff Sgt. Thomas L. Williams known as Bill is awarded the Purple Heart for a January 1 wound while serving with the Fifth Army. He remained in the hospital as of March, and the decoration has been received by his father T. L. Williams.
Lieut. Tom Wiley Jr. graduated Saturday at Lubbock with wings and a second lieutenant’s commission and is visiting his parents this week before reporting to Ft. Garth Army Air Base for combat training on April 27. He joined the Air Forces at 18 and trained in Texas from Texas A and M College to Ft. Stockton San Angelo and Lubbock.
Captain Robert Taylor engineering officer at the 308th Army Air Forces Training Detachment Stamford Flying school has been transferred to the WASPS training school at Sweetwater. He and Mrs. Taylor left Sunday for Sweetwater after several years here. Lieut J E Cunnie becomes new tactical officer at Stamford Flying school transferring from San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. He replaces Lieut Edward K Weaver who moved to Sikeston Missouri.
Cpl Billy Engler an Army Air Forces instrument specialist is home on a 30 day furlough after service overseas. He was injured on December 8 and hospitalized in Africa. He arrived in South Carolina March 18 and will report to Brooks General Hospital San Antonio before returning to overseas service. He visits wife and daughter Carolyn Kay and mother Mrs Rose Shipman. Engler has two years service and was sent overseas last August.
Pvt John S Usry son of Mr and Mrs R W Usry of Old Glory is now somewhere in Australia He is brother to Mrs L T Williams of Ft Worth Mrs L D Trammell and Mrs A J Barbee of Old Glory and Dr Jewel Riley of Throckmorton He attended Old Glory high school played in the Old Glory band and was active in Boy Scouts He worked at Montgomery Ward s in Ft Worth in 1942.
Sergeant Arlen V. Daniel, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Daniel of Stamford, has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal at Dodge City Army Air Field. The award honors a year or more of Army service with character and efficiency rating of excellent.
Eugene Swen, a Montana aviation student, has been sent to the Montana State Teachers Normal School in Bozeman for a five month college training period with the Air Forces. He was previously stationed at Roswell, New Mexico.
Home on leave are Weaver Medlin and Norman Schooting who have just completed boot training in San Diego California. They will return there for assignment.
Chief Petty Officer Paul Corley, visiting his parents in town, left for San Francisco and Pearl Harbor to join his ship. He was delayed by mumps after returning home. Corley served in the Pacific for months below the equator, earning ribbons for eight major engagements and awaiting stars for others. He is a storekeeper with duty as range finder. He shared first hand naval news with Raymond Austin before his departure.
Staff Sgt. William R. Hughes, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hughes, receives the Air Medal for actions against the Japanese in the air attacks on the Marshall Islands. Maj. Gen. Willis H. Hale presents the medal at a Central Pacific atoll ceremony where Hughes’s Mitchell bomber squadron is based. Hughes serves as tail gunner and armorer of the combat crew.
Sgt Lee Roy Glover, wounded in Italy, is at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville Pa. He hopes to visit Stamford soon to see his sister Mrs C H Farr and family and his fiancee Miss Vida Tidwell. A 24 year old with the 36th division he lost a finger from his right hand when wounded September 9. He had been overseas about a year after three years in service and previously lived with his sister. his home was once Baldwin Miss.
Lieut. Bill Swenson arrived Tuesday night to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Swenson. He is on leave after completing combat training at Victorville California and receiving his commission. He reports to Salinas California on May 5 for Operational Training unit work. Swenson is a pilot of a P 39 fighter plane.
Sgt Winfred Rucker son of Mr and Mrs J L Rucker has arrived in England his second time in foreign service
Caudle in England Pie. Rerbert Caudle, son of Mr and Mrs J R Caudle of Avocn, has arrived in England. His wife and daughter, who live in Spur, are visiting this week with the Caudle family. A cablegram was received from Pie Caudle announcing his arrival.
John B. Ashburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. G F Ashburn of Meadow, is visiting in Tuxedo en route from Bridgeport, Mississippi, to Lincoln Army Air Field. He is accompanied by his parents and two brothers George Ed and Tommy, with several relatives visiting the Ashburn home on Sunday.
Bunkley Jr a third class Pharmacist Mate in the United States Navy is home on leave visiting his parents Mr and Mrs C Bunkley and other relatives He is stationed at the base hospital in San Diego California
Homer G Towns chief of the regional biological division of the Soil Conservation Service told Rotary Club members that over stocked ponds cause poor fishing not overfishing. He said stock tanks can supply 25 to 35 million pounds of fish annually in Texas and advised fishing start six months after stocking Morrison Liston joined the Rotary Club.
The revival meeting opened Sunday at First Baptist Church and runs through next week ending Sunday April. Daily services are at 10 a.m. and 8 15 p.m. with a 7 45 p m prayer service. Dr Julian Atwood from Highland Avenue Baptist Dallas preaches this week.
Donations pour in from Leeders 42 club Anson Hawley Stamford and Corinth communities as Red Cross kit efforts expand. Mrs Dick Rowland leads donations while Anson Womans Auxiliary and other groups contribute funds and bandages with 35 Holland cloth bandages and quilts sent from Plainview and Corinth. Surgical dressings work continues at Stamford Junior High.
Lieut. John Earl Bounds, previously stationed in India, has moved to China for new duties. His transfer follows prior postings and reflects ongoing U S military activity in Asia as authorities confirm the assignment.
Dick Rowland, salvage chairman, urges residents to save salvaged rags and bring them to local dealers. Boy Scouts collect fats and metals. 5,740 pounds marketed to date. Troop 41 handles fats with Eddie Ikard and Harmon Datfern as scoutmasters. Troop 40 handles paper with Ed Wyrick and Syd Russell Jr. as scoutmasters. Troop 42 handles metals under Gordon Davis and Dale Muse.
The revival at the Foursquare Gospel Church continues with daily services at 8:30 p.m. Sunday opening sermon by Rev. Mary Fulton, with evangelist Rev. Zona Hawes. Topics for this week include Strange as it Seems and Counterfeit Baptism among others. Miss Lola Brannon leads music with special numbers each night.
Austin Jones purchases the Freeman Cafe on the south side of the square from Mr and Mrs Jim Freeman who ran it for a year and a half. The cafe will be called the Jones cafe with Jones serving briefly and his wife assisting. Freeman returns to oil field work operating a rod and tubing machine.
Joe Piwetz died of a heart attack in Detroit Michigan on Sunday night his wife notified relatives here. He was a brother of Mrs Julia Miller and Eddie Piwetz of this city and John Piwetz of Gonzales another brother Victor died at Weimer last July. Mr Piwetz was buried in Detroit.
The Exchange Club hosted a post bond drive dinner for Rotarians at the Stam ford Flying School mess hall. Marvin Hinds opened the program with remarks, Mayor A C Humphrey acted as toastmaster, Lt Gov John Lee Smith spoke, Jane Hughes sang, and Joe D Humphrey delivered the main address praising American values.
Final report from Jones county shows 17 419 raised toward a 14 600 War Fund goal. Of the amount 14 318 81 goes to national headquarters and 3 100 66 retained for home service and local aids. Four thousand eight hundred forty five individuals donated one dollar or more. Thirty nine towns and community chairmen assisted, with Oran A Dean Avoca L H Lawrence M R Sealy Rev Hugo B Haterius and others listed as local organizers.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion lists committee assignments with Grady Bowdry as chairman of the ranch chuckwagons and W. G. Swensen serving as president. The announcement highlights completed committee formation for the event.
Lieut and Mrs Joe Musil of San Angelo spent two days in town with Lieut Musil s parents Mr and Mrs F J Musil during the Easter season. Cpl Emory Musil, an aviation student in Waco, was home at the same time awaiting assignment to an aviation school. The third brother Aviation Student Frank Musil is in Montana State University for a five month flight training period.
Mrs J H Rutherford and Mrs J F McCulloch traveled to Knox City on Tuesday for a district meeting of the Methodist Woman's Society of Christian Service.
Staff Sgt. Frank Warren Rye killed on Los Negros Island Admiralties March 7 aged 23. Overseas since last June he served in cavalry, landed in Australia then New Guinea. Last furlough Sept 1942. Survived by parents J W and Mrs Rye, brother Cpl. James Rye in Kansas, sister Mrs Fred Altman, step brother Sgt Donald Linville in England. A brother returned home this week. Meals and local church ties noted.
Lieutenant Willard Bryan Corley was killed in action over Germany on his 11th mission. The war department notified his parents, A. Y. and Mrs. Corley, of his death. He co piloted the B 17 Heaven Can Wait and had previously been stationed at Lowry Field New Orleans Army Base March Field Barstow Mojave range. He graduated from Anson High School in 1933 and had studied at North Texas Agricultural College and Texas Wesleyan College. He married Myrna Riley on October 3, 1942, when she taught home economics in Orange Texas.
Howard Price becomes the new agent for Sinclair Refining Co. replacing Clarence Goad who will enter military service next month. Price, previously with Fain McGaha Co. for years, and his wife reside near Avoca on East McHarg Avenue.
J E Drummond agent for the MKT railway was transferred to Temple and left Sunday to begin duties there. Mrs Drummond will join him soon. D L Adair of Carbon is in town as relief agent and a new agent will likely be announced next week.
Joe Lattimore grandson of Mr and Mrs J W Newsome of this city entered Baylor Dental school in Dallas after graduating from the University of Texas in January He previously tried to enter the armed services but was turned down because of his eyes Stamford High school is listed as his prior alma mater.
Betty Jo Mahood president of Area II Future Homemakers of Texas left Thursday for Austin to attend the spring executive meeting. She traveled with Jackie Reetor of Spur Area II and home economics teacher Mrs Jeffers who spent Wednesday night in Stamford.
Mrs Bill Hatcher was installed as president of the Pierian Club at the final meeting held in the home economics cottage. New officers include Mrs H J Moreland Jr as first vice president and Mrs R C Giles as second vice president with detailed duties outlined. The meeting featured a postwar program theme Salute to the Future with poems by Miss May Massey and talks on Hands Across the Sea Building Americans of Tomorrow and Post War Wonders.
J. B. McCuistion Jr. suffered severe facial, shoulder, and leg burns when gasoline flashed while drawing fuel from a truck in Odessa. He remains hospitalized as his wife Linda Kay and others travel to Odessa. The man previously burned in Stamford two years ago has since recovered.
Mrs. Green manager of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce travels to Vernon with her husband Mr. Green Vernon Chamber of Commerce manager to attend the annual Chamber of Commerce managers Association of West Texas meeting to be held Thursday through Saturday.
Grady Bowdry city manager attended the first annual Texas City Managers Association meeting in Dallas opening Sunday night and running through Tuesday. Mrs Bowdry joined him and later visited Corsicana to see her mother for a short visit.
Frank Sosebee named new city water superintendent will assume duties May 1 succeeding Henry Cook who served 22 years. A city water and sewer mapping project underway locates valves hydrants and manholes with Warren Cantrell employed to compile the map.
Desca Hale of the A and M College Extension Service notes recreation outlets help prevent delinquency in several Texas counties. A Morton youth center, opened after a curfew meeting, uses Masonic space, with furniture donations and volunteer labor. Funds will come from donations, a basketball game, and a lunch sale as volunteers run committees and activities with 4 H and county agents backing youth programs.
Deposits in Stamford two banks totaled 431,352.82 below their December 31 report. On December 31 combined deposits were 3,974,501.42, falling to 3,543,241.60 by April 13. Stamford State Bank held 1,291,339.14 on April 13 versus 1,505,045.85 on December 31. First National Bank deposits on April 18 were 2,251,902.46, about 200,000 less than December 31.
A new class of aviation cadets arrived at Stamford Flying School Sunday to start primary flight training. The class came from San Antonio. The graduating class left Sunday for Perrin Field in Sherman to begin basic training. A graduation dance was held on August 8 at the recreation hall with the lower class hosting.
