Hon W C McChord has arranged agents for $125000 to finance the 1907 burley crop in Washington county. Funds are ready to be turned over to the Board of Control of the county when needed. The pledge implies assurance for a smooth season and hopeful prospects for future harvests.
The Rev G W Lyon pastor of the Springfield Methodist church preached his farewell sermon and will leave Tuesday for Columbia Ky to attend the annual Louisville District Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church. He has served the church for two years and is well regarded by members and the broader community.
Harrodsburg Herald reports the largest single mortgage in Mercer County. Ruth Chinn and Col. Jack P. Chinn owe about $50,000 on 407 acres near the Lexington pike. First mortgage from February 9, 1903 to Northwestern Life Insurance Co. for $15,000 covers the same land. The second secures farm assets including twenty-one colts, sixteen suckling colts, eight work mules, three farm horses, and the crop share. Mortgagees include Farmers Bank of Frankfort, Mercer National Bank, and First National Bank of Harrodsburg. The farm is valued at about $50,000. John D. Rockefeller has public gifts totaling $2,055,000 with distributions to various boards, Chicago, mission work, and the Rockefeller Institute.
Sidney Green a popular young man died Sunday at his brother in law J C McBirdys home after a paralysis stroke. He had lived in Louisville recently and earlier in Sherman and London. Survived by sisters Mrs Moore Mrs Handy and brothers Will James and C Al Green. Funeral at 2 30 pm Monday by Rev R E C Lawson followed by burial in Springfield cemetery.
At sunset this evening Myrtle Martin daughter of Mr and Mrs Eugene Martin will marry Adolph Banack at the Martins home in Pleasant Grove. The couple are well known in the neighborhood and friends extend congratulations to Mr and Mrs Banack.
In Bardstown Kentucky on September 13 Daily Kelly reports Judge S W Hager and Congressman Ben Johnson will address the voters of Washington County in Springfield on Thursday night September 26. Speakers begin at 8 oclock in Bardstown. Kelly, a respected farmer, died at his son’s home in Bardstown aged eighty. He leaves a son Judge Kelly and a daughter Mrs Drew A Broderson of Russellville. Funeral at the Christian church tomorrow at 2 pm with burial in Bardstown cemetery.
Bardstown Ky Sept 13 Mrs Ollie Wilson Richardson daughter of the late Oliver Wilson of Bardstown died at her home in Chicago September 11 aged about 70 years. She leaves a husband Collins Richardson two daughters aged thirteen and fifteen a brother Fred Wilson and a sister Mrs Sam Irvine of Bardstown. The funeral will be held at St Josephs Catholic church tomorrow at 9 oclock with interment in St Josephs cemetery.
On the last Saturday in September tobacco farmers with pooled tobacco in Washington County will elect a member to the County Board of Control in their precincts. Elected precinct officials will then meet in Springfield on the first Saturday in October to choose a chairman who must attend the State Board meeting in Winchester in October for reorganization. Do not miss the precinct meetings.
A colorman Bee Baker visited Jasler Catlett's bastile and allegedly stole a horse from Ben West. Baker rode the horse toward town and hid it to sell for cash. Marshal Grace tracked the animal and Baker after hours of sleuth work. Baker was arrested and held to answer in the circuit court in fifteen dollars bail.
Mrs Abegil Ensor aged 72 died at her brother’s home near Lebanon of senility. Born in Marion county she lived in the McIntire area with her husband before his death she moved to Marion county and later resided with her brother near Lebanon. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Springfield at 3 pm conducted by Rev Graves of Lebanon and she was buried in Springfield cemetery.
Local bankers J. A. Boulware and A. C. McElroy attended the Kentucky Bankers Association annual meeting opening today at the Seelbach Hotel Louisville for a two day session. They will be hosted at a reception by the Louisville clearing houses tonight and attend the State Fair as a group tomorrow afternoon.
Springfield Masonic lodge members attended the dedication of Lebanon’s new Masonic building costing 35000 dollars. Past Grand Master Hopper of Louisville delivered the dedicatory address as Knights Hopper and Smith of Danville led remarks. A Knight Templar banquet followed for fifteen candidates with Springfield Masons among the attendees.
Mrs. Lavinia Webster of Mackville died last Saturday morning at age 91 due to old age infirmities. She was twice married to Johnson Graves and John W. Webster, with two children from the first marriage. A charter member of Mackville Christian church, she served as a longtime charity worker. Funeral services were held at the Mackville Christian church conducted by Rev. John L. Brewer, with a large turnout. Burial followed at Peters burying ground.
One hundred and fifty dollars worth of tickets were sold at the L and N depot in Springfield this morning to attendees bound for the State Fair in Louisville. A large number were sold Monday and Tuesday and many more will go later in the week, making a sizable turnout for Springfield on a public event. About seventy people rode the morning train from Springfield to the fair.
The Democratic State Campaign Committee plans to invite Senator E H Carmack of Tennessee and Judge Judson S Harmon of Cincinnati to Kentucky for speeches. Judges Harmon and Yost and Capt W J Stone have offered to campaign, with Stone a former Goebel opponent. Both Yost and Stone will tour the state until election day.
Springfield merchants forecast a lively fall trade as they stock up on goods for the season. Washington county farmers are seen as liberal patrons, with crops expected to turn into cash and boost business upon opening.
Mr. E. A. Fox Kentucky Sunday School Association general secretary will spend Sunday September 22 in Springfield meeting all county Sunday School workers at the Presbyterian church at 2 30 p m to discuss important matters. Also notices of births and visits appear along with local social news and a death in Springfield Sidney Greene.
The Fredericktown picnic for Holy Trinity church drew many attendees last Saturday enjoying ideal weather and ample amusements. Praise goes to Rev Father Pieters for orderly conduct and a well managed day. The on site dinner and revenue were standout features as organizers look forward to next year.
Republicans at the county convention held last Saturday afternoon failed to nominate a candidate to oppose Democratic nominee Hon. W. C. McChord for Representative.
Several Springfield citizens left Monday for the Southwest, mainly Oklahoma territory, to locate in that country in the near future. They are W. S. Lawrence, A. S. Mayes, Chas. Logsdon and Joe Pettus.
County Organizer Will Nally visits A. S. of E. Locals in Washington County. Some locals thrive while others struggle. He urges sustained interest and support for the greatest farmers' organization this nation has ever known.
A Farmers Institute is in session at the Court House this afternoon and will continue through tomorrow with discussions on agricultural practices and community updates.
