A Springfield reader urges strict enforcement of vagrancy laws to combat idle able bodied men and habitual loafers. He cites crime risk and street theft by black vagrants, calls officers to act, and urges citizens to push for work or removal of the idle. He praises hardworking local Black residents and seeks united action to restore order.
In Lexington on November 12 the Central Christian church asked its women choir members to sing bareheaded to avoid distracting minds from the sermon. The choir loft sits behind the pulpit and church officers argued bright hats would engross attention. The women wore white dresses to remain inconspicuous.
Mrs Ida Elliott hosted a large singing in honor of her guest Miss Josie Arnok of Boyle county who has been visiting. Phillip Wagner a deaf mute from Harrodsburg worked at Deep Creek cemetery. Marcus Cocanougher is reported better. John H Elliott Jr. traveled to Mackville on business. George Elliott, out six weeks with a sore foot, can now work. Mr and Mrs J D Wilkerson of Boyle county visited Mr and Mrs J B C Elliott over weekend.
Danville Advocate notes Dean Carey of this county lost his guard post at Frankfort Penitentiary amid a dispute with Blackburn. A majority of prison commissioners favored Old Joe, with Carey urged for reinstatement though political lines were crossed. Also reported, John Gibson and Frank Marion, fathers, were killed when a deck collapsed at Beattyville Kentucky.

Rev Purdom leads Bethlehem gatherings assisted by Rev Williama from Springfield. Misses Mary Lampton of Springfield and Frances Litsey of Pleasant Grove attended services last week. H J Cocanougher listed sick. his residence fire last Friday caused minor damage. Cocanougher formerly lost a home to fire four years ago. C T Cocanougher hosted dinner with Mrs Mary Christie, Mrs Monahan of Indiana, Mrs Bell Hays and daughters, and Mrs William Peterson. Guests Mrs T R Peterson and daughter of Chicago are visiting. Ella Shaunty and Effie Kim Berlin traveled to Louisville. Emma Leachman returned to Louisville after visiting here. Lois Wilson of Gravel Switch visits Lottie Hays.

Mr Thomas Scroghan died after nine weeks of typhoid fever at his home near town. The body was taken to Hebron church Mercer county and interred. He was about thirty eight, leaves three children, two small. His wife had died six years ago. The family receives heartfelt sympathy. He was a Christian and had lived in Washington county six years after moving from Mercer county.
Eugene Hardesty, seven months old, died at his grandmother's home in Lebanon last Saturday after contracting spinal meningitis. He was interred there Sunday as his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hardesty receive condolences from the community.
Mr James Hiadd, brother-in-law of Messrs S B and J W Thompson, died at his Texas home last Sunday. He leaves a wife and six children. Hiadd formerly resided in Washington County but moved to Texas twenty seven years ago.
The protracted meet continues at New Hope. Sister Louise Settle and mother hosted a 5 o clock dinner with chrysanthemums and guests including Revs. Adkins and Davis and the Misses Wakefield, Set tle, and Andrews. Bernard Wall wed Miss Maude Yaney at the bride’s home with Rev. Adkins officiating. The couple were later hosted by Lela Wall for dinner. Hallie Huston and Nellie Andrews returned home from Maud after visiting Louise Settle. Jesse Mann treated a group of young ladies to his new phonograph. Revs. Adkins and Davis were entertained at dinner by Mr. and Mrs. James Truax, with several friends attending.
Taxpayers must pay county and state taxes for 1905 immediately or face penalties after December 1. All back taxes owed must be settled or property will be advertised for sale. Official term in office expires January 1. Byron Crooke and W. C. Herrick issue a long feature on causes of Republican defeat in Ohio.
Mrs J R Claybrooke was robbed of her purse Monday evening near Mr W K Robertson’s home on Main street. Springfield police pursue the thief, described as a burly negro, with calls for harsh punishment if caught. Authorities promise action to deter such crime.
The Courier-Journal reports confusion over Thanksgiving dating as President Roosevelt set the date for November 30 while Henderson’s mayor proclaims November 23. The last Thursday rule exists but varies with presidential action and local proclamations.
Campbell's Report notes items for sale in Bardstown Court day including a sow and shoots at 28, an old cow and plug ho priced 18 to 75, several new and old vehicles, and shot guns in demand for rabbits and birds on the 15th. A crowd gathered as fox hunters from Springfield and nearby towns departed, with over 100 dogs registered at the livery stables for the chase this week. S. M. Camrarrt Auctioneer.
Mrs Jerome Colvin entertained many friends in Brooksville last Tuesday. Attendees included Mrs Sallie Noel Mrs W M Sutton Mrs B Porter Mrs Jane Coulter and Miss Artie and Olive Sutton and Hester Noel. Other visits featured Mr frl Cheatham Artie Sutton at W S Goodlett’s home and Mrs Jerome Wells with her mother Mrs Jane Birch.
Marion Do honeys announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Misa Mary to Boyd Winchester Phillips with the wedding set for November 22, 1905. Miss Do honeys is a LebanTon society girl noted as pretty and accomplished. Phillips is a bookkeeper at Farmers National Bank, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Phillips.
The Downing farm on the Georgetown pike, about 1.5 miles from Lexington city limits, sold for 222 per acre. John N. Fisher purchased the 157.23 acre tract featuring a twelve room colonial brick house and about fifty acres of woodland. The site is well located and well watered, regarded as a desirable tract in the area.
Beautiful weather brings busy farmers harvesting corn. Rev Lowen wrapped up meetings at Fairview church with eighteen additions. Local road work on the pike improves travel. School progressions under Miss Ethel Rogers. Miss Irma Graham of Sharpsville remains ill. Mr T J Miller of Willisburg visited on business. Mrs J B Royalty and daughter Annie stayed with Mrs Burkhead. Emma Hyatt visited Mackville parents. James Yates bought turkeys nearby.
Mr W L Graham tends his ill sister Irma in Sharpeville while community members attend church, visit, or travel from Harrodsburg and Illinois. A local dog dispute beads with Perkins, and corn sells at 1.75 per bushel. At B Lawson sale horses fetch 89 to 137.50, cows 2.50 to 34.50, steers 3 to 1, and weanling mares and calves fetch varied prices. terms run ten months without interest. Perkins and Brown sell a saddle mare to a Lexington party.
Mrs Nora Best recovers from throat trouble and M D J Cocanougher can go out after lagrippe. Marcus Cocanougher sold three fat hogs to Charlie Coyle at four cont a. George Cocanougher buys band of sheep from Henry Lawrence, price unknown. Georgio and Grace Cocanougher visited Enido Thursday for shopping. Mrs Liasie Best and children visited Mrs Nannie Christer Thursday. George Elliott and wife visited J W Messrs Harmons and Newton Bradley Sunday. Gertie and Josie Coyle attended church at Antioch. John and Mrs Wallace of Springfield visited Anderson Holderman Sunday. Mattie Begley and Eugene Harmon attended Bethlehem church Sunday night. Charlie Cocanougher bought part of Robert Gray’s farm near Aliceton and plans to move soon. Mrs Paralee Cocanougher visiting son at Deep Creek for a few days. Mattie Bradley and Harrison Coyle attended a musicale at Fenwick schoolhouse last Saturday.
