Mr John Best of near Texas shot and killed a huge eagle after hearing a disturbance among his chickens. The bird measured five and a half feet from tip to tip and yielded a twelve inch fish it had caught. A Democratic County Committee meeting called a primary for August 3 to nominate a Representative.
A lively debate at Fenwick last Thursday night asked Is America Free with affirmative speakers Miss Bettie Barker Jas Janes and Chas Oder and negative speakers Miss Lena Cecil Dan Thompson and Dee Riley. The judges favored the affirmative as audiences enjoyed well delivered talks by Barker Cecil Janes and Thompson and Riley offered a logical though brief rebuttal. The Fenwick Local with 100 members plans another large turnout on June 6 with the topic Was the Indian Treated Worse than the Negro.
The Critic presents a fable where a vain fly taunts a mud turtle perched on a sunlit rock. The turtle endures chatter and torment until he snaps at the fly, proving wisdom may hide behind slow, quiet demeanor rather than loud bravado.
A Kentucky speaker welcomes visitors to the Blue Grass schools gathering in Springfield. At the Kentucky State penitentiary B. W. Lockmiller, one armed convict, stabbed fellow inmate John Hensley multiple times with a shoe knife, causing wounds including to the abdomen that required sixteen stitches. Hensley, a 12 year murder convict from Breathitt County, may die. guards intervened to prevent the fatal attack after a quarrel over a broom handle incident.
Miss Adele C. Torpey of Louisville was voted the prettiest woman in Kentucky in the Courier-Journal beauty contest. Her photo appeared on the newspaper's front page after being selected from 1,500 pictures. Judges included Mrs C C McChord Gen Jno B Castleman and others. Miss Torpey grew up in Bloomfield.
Rev W H Williams attended his sister Miss Hessie Williams as she married Jerome Baxter Pendleton in St Louis on Tuesday. After the ceremony the couple departed for a bridal tour through the South. Pendleton is described as a prominent, prosperous St Louis businessman. the bride had previously visited Rev Williams here last summer, earning admiration.
Mr. C. L. Price has opened an ice cream parlor in the former saloon space. The room is repapered painted and re modeled with new fixtures floor laid in linoleum. Interior is tasteful and modern and he will offer soft drinks as well. The Sun predicts success and invites the public to call.
Mr. W. J. Schoene of Henderson Kentucky will marry Miss Rena V Yankey of near town next Tuesday June 4 at the home of the bride parents Mr and Mrs J S Yankey. Schoene is described as a prosperous young business man and Yankey as a pretty and attractive young woman.
Circuit court commenced here Monday with Judge J. H. Thurman presiding. A few minor cases disposed of. Civil and Commonwealth dockets light. court expected to adjourn this week. Commonwealths Attorney Durham of Greensburg present. GRAND JURY named with foreman Thos Jenkins among listed members.
County court day sales listed by S M Campbell include twelve steers and two year olds at 30.25 per head for W B Hatchett cow and calf combinations at 40 and 82.50, various sows and pigs from 19 to 35.25, a mule at 83, two mules at 165, multiple mares at 112 to 117.50 and 85 and 76, ponies at 50 and 75, a bay horse at 396.50 and another at 112.50.
Ben Powell of Mackville brought a mother possum and eleven young to town, captured by a colored man yesterday. The animals drew interest for their pie potential, with a local elder remarking they will make pies as he watched, mouth watering.
Hon C C McChord reports a notice from Supt Transportation L and N R K Stating that after June 2 the morning passenger train will depart Springfield at 5:00, thirty minutes later than now and arrive Louisville at 4:10, easing connections with Louisville trains. Citizens approve exchange and expect improved service once the Knoxville branch wait at junction ends.
Mr Nace Janes died at his home yesterday morning after several weeks illness of consumption. He was well liked for his accommodating nature and readiness to help others. A Presbyterian church member and devoted Christian, he leaves a wife and several children. The Sun extends sympathy as burial is arranged.
A simple remedy claims almost certain success for gallstones using hard cinder and olive oil. Take one tablespoonful of the oil in two-thirds of a glass of cinder before each meal and at bedtime.
Banks in Springfield will be closed tomorrow Thursday in observance of Decoration Day.
The Kentucky State Journal reports a well founded rumor that Judge Cantril plans to resign. His son J Campbell Cantrill says the Judge has considered it for some time but cannot yet confirm.
