The Whale Bone Mystery and the Widder Webb Widow
In a New England farm tale Professor Sweetzer, a shy naturalist, digs for whale bones after a six foot backbone is found in a Connecticut gravel pit. Rival Hiram Stebbins grows jealous as the professor bonds with Widow Webb over beetles and a seven spot bumblebee, ending in a comic bumblebee assault and a runaway professor chasing more bones.

The Ship's Log and Log Line System
The log chart uses a log chip on a circular leaded board and a 150 to 200 fathom log line wound on a keel. Divisions called knots mark the line by string and knot count, with one knot equal to 417.3 feet. Speed is read from knots run out in half a minute, allowing hourly estimates by multiplication. The log book records heaving, events, and ship matters as kept in the log.
