Aged about seventy three, a local man died suddenly at his home yesterday after fainting in the yard while going to the barn. He leaves a wife and two sons and a daughter, with funeral services to be held at Mt Zion this afternoon. His brother Mr Jas Moore died recently in Mooresville.
Friends of Mr Grave Goddard urge him to announce for the Legislature and promise farmer support. Local inquiries show no sign of his decision yet. If he runs he would be a strong candidate and hard to beat.
Enthusiastic crowd in Springfield hears Hon. W. C. McChord and Judge I. A. Thurman advocate pooling the 1907 Burley crop. Over 1700 acres already pooled with 1000 more added in 30 minutes. Washington County Board buys six acre railroad lot for a warehouse near the power house.
A Saxton entertainment Friday drew compliments for the glee club performances and speakers. The program opened with El Korah and Over the Waves sung by the club, with various readings and songs by Louise Hayden Knight and others, followed by medals awarded to Knight Handy and Hattie Rice. A later note mentions the girls baseball practice and race for captain, with possible contenders and remarks on a future herald for cues.
Wm Salmon of Shoals Indiana spent two weeks in the county visiting relatives his first Springfield trip in 53 years He traveled with his parents and siblings to Indiana and is now the sole surviving member of his family A brother who left with him vanished thirty years ago and is believed murdered Salmon served with Sherman in the Civil War and took part in the march to the sea.
Mr. T. E. Ballard of McIntire went to Holy Cross Sunday night after his brother died. The deceased was a well known county figure who cler ked in Ballard's McIntire store for a long time. He was loved and honored by all, and his death came as a great shock to friends.
Mrs Martha Hardin died at her home in Palin last week aged 101 years five months and ten days. She was perhaps the oldest person in Kentucky and one of the most interesting residents of the region. Her memory was keen and she recalled many stories from the days of our grandfathers. She lived to see her great great grandchildren.
Little Elizabeth O Bryan daughter of the late Jas P O Bryan died at St. Marys Hospital in Louisville from measles. Her remains were brought to McIntire and interred in St Rose cemetery last Monday.
The remains of Mr. Scott Durham arrived Monday at noon from Patton California. Funeral services were conducted by Rev Purdam and the body was interred at Bethichém Tuesday morning.
The Sun extends congratulations to Jas Hayes and Nora Bonta who wed at Seelbach's Hotel Louisville last week. Hayes is a prominent young county farmer and Nora is praised as a highly accomplished young woman. May their voyage be happy as Life’s barque sails toward rest.
Luther Burns escaped death or serious injury last Friday while driving home behind Reed Spalding in Willisburg. Spalding pulled aside at the tollgate to let a rider pass. Burns, unaware, rode up and collided with John Reed on horseback. Burns suffered a sprained wrist. his buggy was nearly demolished. The rider and the negro, John Reed, were thrown but not seriously hurt.
County Organizer Will Nally of the U S E will address gatherings Friday night in Pleasant Gore and Saturday night in Fredericktown. He is expected to discuss party plans and local outreach.
James A. Shipp, who killed J. A. Smith in Campbellsville, was moved for safe keeping after a life sentence in Taylor County was reversed on appeal. A new trial and venue change were ordered, affidavits urged Shipp not be kept in Taylor County jail, and he was relocated. The Commonwealth sought materials for the Thaw case from the Court of Appeals clerk to send to New York.
Attending with Mr. E. S. Mayes Jr the Duroc bred sow sale in Louisville drew broad Western and Southern state representation. The top price averaged 140 per head with a record sale. Ohio led overall with 139.44 per head, top individual bids reaching 590 for Kentucky and 500 for Indiana as Iowa and Nebraska also competed. J E Shelby stayed active among bidders at the breeder auction.
Circuit Court convened Monday with little important business expected this term. Judge Thurman admonished the grand jury with a forcible charge. Named attendees include J R Davis, Ed Linton, Leo Haydon, Robin Wheatley, J R Harmon, and Sheriff Sterling Hungate among others. Foreman Lance Trent leads the grand jury.
Haydon E. Hake died February 20 1907 at his Sparrow area home in Ky in the 89th year of his age after infirmities of old age. A pioneer settler and upright citizen with wide acquaintance he leaves six sons and many friends in the region and neighboring counties.
Mr. S. B. Thompson announces they will depart Lebanon to install hotel fixtures at a new location. He and his wife will relocate soon but have not yet decided the exact site.
