Child Burned To Death In Springfield Tragedy

Lula Earl Foster, fourteen months old, died after her clothing caught fire from a newspaper near her while playing with her sister at home. The oldest child had procured matches, igniting the paper. Mrs. Foster left briefly for a bucket of water. upon return she found the baby severely burned. Physicians failed to save the infant, which died at noon. The Phoenix Sun notes the family’s grief and local sympathy, with the body later buried in Willisburg near the couple’s former home. Rufus Foster works for the telephone company and the family has many grieving friends in Springfield.

Death of Geo Birch at Willisburg

Geo Birch aged about thirty four died at his mother's home in Willisburg last Sunday night from dropsy. He had lived in Lonaville but recently returned to his mother's house to recuperate. Funeral services were held at Wilsons Christian church Monday afternoon by Eki J A Simms. Interment followed at the local cemetery. He leaves a wife and children, a mother, and several brothers and sisters. The Sun extends sympathy.

Shipp to Stand Trial Again in Lebanon Court

Jas. F. Shipp who killed a man named Smith at Campbellsville seventeen months ago will face a second trial in Lebanon starting Monday week. He received a life sentence in Taylor Circuit Court, later granted a new trial by the Court of Appeals, and has since been confined in the Lebanon jail.

Big Barbecue at Fair Grounds Draws County Crowd

The Harrodsburg Democrat reports a tobacco growers rally and barbecue set for May 4 at the Fair Grounds. Saxon’s Band from Lexington will provide music, with morning and afternoon addresses by speakers including President Clarerice LeBus, W. C. McChord, and Senator Campell Cantrell. The event aims to celebrate the 1907 Burley crop pooling in Mercer County and unite farmers against trust control.

Burned To a Crisp New Haven Beno

A three year old girl near Gethsemane Abbey suffered fatal burns when a stove suction ignited her clothing. The child died after four hours from extensive injuries. Parents were away. neighbors wrapped the girl in a blanket and Dr. Greenwell attended.

Stock Law Notice In Effect In Washington County

Residents in affected districts are warned to keep stock off public highways. The Sheriff and deputies will seize stock running at large. Officials urge prompt attention to avoid costs and trouble.

L N Will Take No Chances On Bowling Green Dry Move

Bowling Green Kentucky April 12 Hon John E Dubose attorney for the L and N says if the town votes dry on June first the railroad will not ship intoxicating liquors into the city or prohibited territory as soon as records show the election. Local agents will return whisky to sender and refuse delivery, with the policy to be applied everywhere without exception.

At a 1907 executive committee gathering in Lexington the Burley Tobacco Society unanimously voted to convene a full board meeting on April 24 at The Phoenix Hotel to plan pledges and canvassing for the 1907 season. Clarence Lebus urged daily effort, precinct canvassing, and prompt pledge compilation.

Case on tobacco pledge case in Kentucky court

Beankfort April 15. Judge Barker hears motion to dissolve a temporary injunction in Woodford county over the right of a landlord to sign a tenant’s tobacco or crop to the American Tobacco Company. The Woodford County Board of Control won against the company. Tenant P H Kimbrough pledged tobacco to the Society of Equity. Reynolds seeks to sell the crop. Continuance granted for two weeks for perfection of papers and appearance of additional counsel.

Dr Smock Beholds West and Kentucky Ties

Dr S J Smock returns from a lengthy Western tour expressing mixed views on life there while affirming affection for Kentucky. Also reported is the death of Mrs Nannie Burks of Manton at age fifty six after months of illness. Funeral services were held at St Rose Catholic church and interment followed at St Rose cemetery. Her husband predeceased her and she left grown children and many friends. The Sun offers condolences to the bereaved.

Marriage of Wm L Cambron and Ida B Hamilton Announced

Announcement states the marriage of Wm L Cambron of this place to Ida B Hamilton of Lebanon. Banns were published at St. Dominic's church and the ceremony will be held at St. Charles church in Marion county. The bride is the daughter of Len Hamilton, a prominent Marion County farmer, and both families expect many congratulatory wishes in advance.

Wets Win at Paris Kentucky in Bourbon County Vote

Paris Kentucky April 11 wets won by 282 votes ending years as the only wet spot in Bourbon county. Campaign marked by intensity with processions prayer meetings church bells ringing and early voting. Paris, home of Bourbon whisky, drew visitors from Maysville Lexington Cynthiana Mt Sterling Carlisle and other central Kentucky towns as spectators.

Thaw Jury Deadlocked in Murder Trial

After long deliberations the jury weighing Harry K. Thaw's case reported to Justice Fitzgerald that they could not reach an agreement. Seven favored first degree murder, five for acquittal on insanity. A juror stated unwritten law played no part in their deliberations. Thaw faces an extended wait with no retrial until October term, if at all. District Attorney Jerome indicated further action.

Young Men In Trouble Poses As Government Agent

Baker of Lancaster visited Springfield last Wednesday posing as a government life insurance agent. He tried to collect money from elderly Black soldiers for fictitious policies, failed to insure anyone, and then moved to Willisburg using a horse and buggy from Wharton & Tapp. In Willisburg he framed Henry Paddock as a whisky violator and took a questionable five dollar bill, keeping the larger note. He is believed to have then headed to Lancaster with Louis Kelly, while City Marshal Grace investigates.

Settled Out of Court In Louisville Fraud Case

H D Potter of Eclipse Paint Co Cleveland was arrested in Louisville on a charge of obtaining 35 dollars by false pretenses after forging a telegram and drawing on his company. He was brought back to town and the matter settled when a cousin paid debts. the offense could have led to prison if tried. Potter appeared well bred but is believed to have acted hastily.

Bowling team Lily defeat Tailormades on Early Owl alleys

The bowling team known as the Tailormades from Lehander were defeated by the Lily team from this city on the Early Owl alleys in a three game match. Springfield won all three games easily and the score was expected to be repeated. A large crowd witnessed the contest and the following scores were recorded.
