Pinawa residents hosted and visited friends across Winnipeg Kenora and Lac du Bonnet during late summer. Allen Sargeant from Australia arrives to teach. Alvin Tyndall returns home after hospital confinement. a local bazaar for Cancer Fund is planned with music by the Silver-Tone Seven. A London show displays a British bonnet in imitation of 18th century style.
The Winter Club staged nineteen three round bouts featuring Richard Heber Jimmy Bristow and a lineup of contenders in Pine Falls. Tom McKew Walter Souka and Ronald Baker earned notable wins while several matches ended in draws or controversial decisions as the community was urged to support a rink roof project.
The local sash and door factory run by Ernie Donin has produced many homes and public buildings within over thirty miles and even shipped windows by air to distant points. A past shortage of glass and lumber limited output, but Ernie filled the demand with thorough work.
Vannar Lindquist, driver for G and S Transfer, vanished after parking a trailer in a local garage on a Saturday. The truck was later found overturned on the Pointe du Bois highway with no trace of Lindquist, causing anxiety to relatives and friends.
On a drizzly Friday morning September 19 William Currie driving from Beausejour in the Trans Canada highway area was struck by a two ton truck while turning into A Winkler’s driveway. His three quarter ton truck loaded with apples overturned into the ditch. Currie suffered a three stitch cut and minor bruises.
The annual Achievement Day Garden Club Fair will be held in the Community Hall Lac du Bonnet on Saturday Sept 27 at 1 30 p m C S Prodan of the Department of Agriculture will attend and hopes members exhibit and attend despite poor weather many vegetables can be entered and organizers aim for a record year
Wing Commander M. Brown of Lac du Bonnet is awarded the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star by the French government announced by RCAF headquarters. He is among five Manitobans honored, with the other four from Winnipeg.
The annual Whist Drive and vegetable sale concluded Monday evening with Genial Joe Sparman as auctioneer. Prizes awarded in Whist went to Mrs. Omer LeVoie, Mrs. Jack Park, Bert Gillie, and Andy Usackis. Paul August and Jim Russell tied in the weight guess, the pumpkin weighing 40 pounds 2 ounces. Jim won the pumpkin after a card draw.
Rev H Choronzy arrives by air to be at his mother’s bedside as he visits the St Boniface hospital. The note adds hope for a speedy recovery. William Topoliwski departs for Port Alberni B C for winter work. Miss Nettie Bodnar of West
Pine Falls mourns the sudden death of Bernard Theodore van Malsen known as Ben a leading city figure. Born in The Hague March 11 1901 he moved to Canada 1919 and settled in Pine Falls in 1928. He organized the Voyageurs Club Rovers Athletic Club and helped form the Office Workers union. An Oddfellow funeral was held at United Church with burial in Pine Falls cemetery.
Stephen Shumilak of Brokenhead died at his residence on September 17 at age 77. Born in Austria he came to Canada 50 years ago and settled in the Brokenhead district. Funeral was held September 21 at Russell's Funeral Chapel Beausejour with burial in Polish National cemetery Beausejour. Surviving are six sons Peter Paul John Fred William in district Henry in the United States two daughters Mary in Winnipeg and Annie in B.C.
The Springfield Leader reports the death of Ben van Malsen our Pine Falls representative. He was valued for prompt reliable work and admired for his courteous nature. The Editor and staff extend deep sympathy to Mrs van Malsen and Marie Cecile.
Funeral services were held at Russell's Funeral Chapel Beausejour at 2 p m Friday September 19 for the infant son of Mr and Mrs Lorne Miller formerly Lorna Sherriffe Beausejour Rev P Jaworski of St Marys Church officiated
Manitoba Good Roads Association sponsors a beautification campaign alongside the Road Competition. Judges evaluating towns consider appearance, streets, lawns, and flower beds across six Municipal Districts. Reeve Percy Beachall Rosser W J Graves J E McAuley and Gerald Wade toured the districts.
Hawk Lake resident Ann Bodnar visits her parents Mr and Mrs H Bodnar then returns to Armstrong Ontario to work for the CNR. Mr and Mrs P Franklin spend a short holiday with the Bodnars and plan to reside near Pelican Sioux Lookout for winter. An old age pensioner A Kelluk was rushed to St Boniface hospital in fair condition. Dick Wendeborn departs for Winnipeg to begin first year at the University of Manitoba. Local families J Bandola and K Bandola host visitors and friends Dick Tuyl Peter Korelewich. Residents Wm Kachur J H Leegus J M Sitar and A Zadorozny drove to the city last weekend.
A Walkleyburg farmer John Smoley, 57, and his wife Dora, 50, are treated at Selkirk hospital after a .22 rifle incident on September 18. Mrs Smoley was grazed by a bullet fired from a window. she fled to a post office while Mr Smoley shot himself in the forehead. Police will file charges of attempted murder and death by own action. Walkleyburg lies six miles north of Tyndall.
