Holiday slump as town changes hands and garden thieves target crops

W S Kennard notes a quiet week with fewer holiday visitors and announces the Johnson property change in town. Fred Simmons seeks the thief or thieves who stole garden crops, proposing a 50 50 share. Local residents and visitors mingle in area movements

Elma residents and guests, including Miss Ann Zubroniewich of Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Borecki of Toronto, visit relatives in Emo. Several families plan moves for winter or new homes in Roblin Keewatin and Dunville. Others travel to Sudbury or spend weekends with relatives as year ends.

Ladies Auxiliary Meeting at St Marys Church Rallies New Members

The Ladies Auxiliary of St Marys Church met September 9 at Mrs Brownell’s home with 28 members. Officers were re elected by acclamation and five new members welcomed. Plans included a November 25 sale of work, Harvest Festival decorating on September 21, and a September 22 Community Hall whist drive with vegetable sale lunch.

Brokenhead Council Drives Grants for Gravel Roads

At the September 9 meeting, Brokenhead Municipality Council applied to the Department of Public Works for a special gravel grant. Ratepayers have raised funds to contribute to side road graveling, with Dencross-Libau road noted for substantial local fundraising led by Eric Bauschke who collected 1152.00 to lay over 3800 yards of gravel. The council aims to restore and improve roads this year through a concerted drive.

Pickerel Catch Beats Record at Great Falls

Holy Pickerel Gordon Alexander a Manitoba University science student who spent summers at Great Falls caught an oversized pickerel last Sunday. It measured 29 inches long weighed 7 pounds 34 ounces and had a girth of 1314 inches.

Sympathy for Whitemouth Mourns Minaki Conductor

Residents in Whitemouth and district mourn the death of Fred Skogsberg conductor of the Minaki holiday special killed in the Dugald collision. Genuine sympathy is extended to Mrs Skogsberg and her sons. Mrs Skogsberg is a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Alex Anderson of Whitemouth.

Picnic at Lac du Bonnet base with 80 guests

The Department of Mines and Natural Resources hosted a picnic at the Natural Resources Base Lac du Bonnet on Saturday. About 80 to 90 guests toured the base facilities and hangars before moving to the Anglican Church Boys Camp for a corn boil across the Winnipeg River. The weather was not cooperative, but the event was enjoyed by all.

Ingeborg Thornquist 67 Dies in Lac du Bonnet Area

Mrs. Ingeborg Thornquist died August 28 in St. Boniface hospital. A longtime Lac du Bonnet resident, she lived in Brookfield district and belonged to the Viking Lodge of the Vasa Order. Burial at Riverland cemetery August 31 with Rev. S Richardson officiating. Renshaw Funeral service handled arrangements.

Maria Stecyk obituary in Beausejour Manitoba

Funeral services for 81 year old Maria Stecyk of Beausejour were held at the Greek Catholic church with burial in the local cemetery. Born in Ukraine she immigrated to Canada in 1897, lived in Brokenhead 42 years, later moved to Beausejour. Dirigible Marker Sighting Near Gimli

Curiosity gripped LAC DU BONNET as a 30 foot dirigible drifted northeast after a stationary spell. Local aircraft failed to identify it and origin remained a mystery though later reports said the balloon served as a Gimli marker before breaking from its moorings.

Beausejour W I Plans Cancer Fund Tag Day

The Beausejour Women’s Institute opened its fall season at the Beausejour hotel with Mrs W R Bethel presiding. Members and visitors attended as the group voted to sponsor a tag day for the Cancer Research fund on September 26 under the direction of Mrs Hayes and Mrs Abramson. Dr Chown public health doctor gave an informative talk on public health. The guest speaker was introduced by Mrs S C Henderson.

Mrs. P Lalor returned from a month long holiday visiting western provinces and states. She toured Moosomin Regina Okanagan Valley Penticton Vancouver Victoria Sidney and Seattle seeing friends, farms, and notable sites including Bing Crosby’s ranch.
