Harmon Journal Tells of Winnipeg River Trip

One hundred and sixty years ago Daniel Williams Harmon a future North West Company bourgeois, journeyed by river from the western border of the province to Fort Alexander on the Winnipeg River. He noted low waters in May 1805, burnt riverbanks, feed shortages for horses, and stops at Montagne a la Bosse and near the Souris mouth. The journal records rival posts, a three-way dance ending in a North West Bowl, and glimpses of early missionary history among local Indians. By June 1 the party neared Pine River and sturgeon hunting opportunities.

Portage Diary Notes North West Company Route and Meals

The excerpt blends home economics on daily meal patterns with Harmon's 18th century voyage observations. It mentions Portage La Prairie, a misnamed North West Company fort site, the rich spring sturgeon gathering area, and Harmon's stop near Lake Winnipeg and Fort Alexander as fur trade networks prepare for Fort William.
