The Great Falls Water Ski Club elected Jim LeRoye president at the spring meeting held Thursday evening in the Community Center. Officers include John Wentz as vice president, Bryan Bernard as secretary, and Johnny Mendella as treasurer. The constitution was amended to widen participation with no towing fees for members and modest increases in membership dues across categories.
The Great Falls Women’s Institute held a Spring Tea Bake Sale and Fashion Show at the Community Center on Friday May 28. Olive’s Fashions of Powerview furnished attire with Olive providing commentary. Models of all ages showcased outfits from morning to night including sport wear beach and loungewear.
Manitoba public schools will be required to display the new Canadian national flag on Canada Day July 1 following royal assent on May 11. After that date the Canadian Ensign will be retired in schools while flag policy allows optional display of the Union Jack and Commonwealth flag at the discretion of divisions and districts. The Manitoba flag remains separate for provincial occasions only.
Thelma E Bernard comments on the erratic weather from sunshine to storms and rain suspects its benefit to gardens when planted. She jokes about mud prompting kitchen floor scrubbing and laments scarce news items, noting she gathered snippets by snooping and peering through keyholes.
Coexistes On Top School Team from Grant Park High defeats Kelvin High 295 to 290 in a close Reach for the Top finale. Ardythe Packer and teammates win the Grolier Society Award and 1000 dollar scholarship. participants receive 250 dollars each on Graduation Day May 28. Coach Millon praised for dedication and thanked Pointe du Bois principal C Atkins for encouragement.
Tan Ross a 19 year old from Seven Sisters Falls won the 1965 Provincial Safe Driving Championships and a shot at the national finals in Toronto. Ian Ross scored 739 of 900 on written read and skill tests to win $100 and the Imperial Esso Trophy. Second was James Koepke 693, third Chuck Ranchie 678. nineteen drivers from ten Manitoba points competed.
At a May 11 meeting the Lac du Bonnet Home and School Association voted to support the National Federation’s Centennial Projects with a 35-cent per member contribution totaling 19.67 dollars for the Centennial Fund Two thirds support national programs including the Inter-Nation Correspondence Plan while Manitoba’s share funds 1967 provincial projects The committee framed the plan as a nation wide appeal praised by Mr Pearson and urged broad support from Home and School members and citizens alike.
William Schultz of Whitemouth won the Nutimik Angler's Award for catching a 19 lb 14 oz northern pike, 42 inches long, near the Whiteshell Rennie River junction on Sunday May 23. He fought the fish for a quarter hour in a 14 foot canoe, then with aid from Mr and Mrs Walchuk and their four children landed it with a net and broken gaff.
Pupils of Mrs A Atkinson presented 24 selections at Lac du Bonnet Memorial Hall on Friday evening. Young performers Tracy Hanton and Craig Hanton captured attention with a duet as the audience witnessed curtsies and bows after their wintry performance.
Owen C. Good of the Canadian Highway Safety Council warns drivers to use headlights in rain fog and after dark. He advises against parking lights as ineffective and illegal and urges regular checks of headlights tail brake and turn signals for safer driving.
Victoria Beach notices a party at Mrs. Ed. Renville's home with fourteen children and seven girls. Gifts received. Weekend visits include Merv Pedden at Renville residence and Ken Bloodworth at Hamp ton home. A. Anderson, Tom Olafson, and Gary Monkman visited Grand Rapids. Congratulations to Leslie and Dawn Thomas on the baby boy.
The Hungry Nine of River Hills opened 1965 by taking top prize at the Pine Falls tournament on May 23. Brian Hanke pitched superbly as they beat Seven Sisters 7 to 3 Lac du Bonnet 7 to 3 and Pine Falls in the final to claim the championship.
The Manitoba Mines Branch and University of Manitoba geology department launch Project Pioneer a three year study to map and reveal rock structure and composition using aeromagnetic data across the Precambrian belt from Lake Winnipeg east to the Ontario border. University researchers will study magnetic properties of local rocks and low level aerial photography will produce base maps for a 1000 feet to the inch scale.
Last Sunday 63 Elks from Winnipeg travelled to Pine Falls for their annual golf game. Martin March emerged victorious with a 79. No eagles were scored during the day, but Martin and fellow Elks met Moore on the 19th hole.
Municipal affairs minister Robert Smellie announces that school tax rebates are being mailed, with about two thousand per day and a ten day turnaround from application to cheque. The rebate now applies whenever local school taxes are paid, replacing the previous year end rule.
