Stag Party Honors B A Koskinen At Carey Home

A Stag party was hosted at J T Carey's home on Wednesday January 7 for B A Koskinen with about 24 guests. Carey presented Koskinen a leather briefcase as refreshments and lunch were served. Koskinen, chief chemist at Manitoba Paper Company for twelve years, leaves Pine Falls for a central research post at Abitibi Power and Paper Company in Sault Ste Marie Ontario.

Heated Bus Arrives for Whitemouth Consolidated School

Effective January fifth the Whitemouth Consolidated School children gain a heated bus for the daily ride replacing horse vans. The school board sanctioned and organized the system with George Henderson holding the contract.

Amateur Show for February 7 Returns to Beausejour

An amateur show sponsored by the Association of Commercial Travellers and CJOB will be broadcast from Beausejour on February 7 featuring local talent. Contestants should submit applications to J. Abramson at Drache Matlin and Abramson Beausejour. Proceeds go to the anti tuberculosis campaign.

Youngest Skip In Spiel Leads Mates To No. 1 Spot

Bern Drysdale the youngest skip wins the Novelty Bonspiel Grand Aggregate in BEAUSEJOUR. The Bern Drysdale team defeats Claude Shields rink in a close final. teammates include Jim Fenning Murray Shuster Beryl Nichols. Consolation honors go to Doc Lippman Eager Beavers and Larry Stebbe. Regular curling begins January 5 with a record membership. A telephone is installed at rink number 79.

Brokenhead Council Approves St Ouen's Bridge Repair

The Rural Municipality of Brokenhead in Manitoba during its January 6 1948 meeting authorized repairing St Ouen's bridge. The session also appointed officers and solicitors for 1948 and ordered forty culverts for drainage work this year.

Deputation Seeks Whitmouth R M Secession in 1948 Meeting

At the January 6 1948 council meet Thomas Harrison sworn in reeve with T G Erskine secretary pro tem. The new council includes George Rerick deputy reeve Edmund Large finance chair and George Erskine timber inspector and sanitary officer. A deputation of fifty Ward 1 ratepayers asks to secede from Whitmouth R M and the council votes to consult Municipal Commissioner views before acting.

First Meeting As Village Council Lac du Bonnet

In the newly incorporated Village of Lac du Bonnet the inaugural meeting on January 6 saw Mayor Fergusson of Great Falls extend New Year wishes to the new mayor and councillors. The council, led by Mayor Sparman with councillors Brown Arsenault and Mikleichuk, operates with secretary W Halliday and aims for development and aircraft access to the region.

Town council met in Town Hall on January 6 and named chairs for key committees. E Kaatz heads Finance, F H Ehinger Streets and Public Works, A P Wilgosh Electric Department, H Fenning Health and Municipal Aid. Years meetings set for February through December with dates listed.

Tickets for the Board of Trade 1948 Ice Carnival and Dance are on sale. Each ticket votes for a Carnival Queen candidate among Betty Englet Hannah Like and Iris Tocher. The event is February 18 with sports and prizes, profits aid the War Memorial.

Winnipeg wedding joins Frances Humphreys and Rev John Bethel

Frances Dorothy Humphreys and Rev. John Bethel were married at All Saints Anglican Church Winnipeg at 4 30 p m January 1. Canon William Askey officiated with Rev Derwyn Jones assisting. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mrs R W Humphreys and the late Mr Humphreys of Winnipeg. the groom is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs William Bethel of Beausejour. The choir sang and Walter McNutt provided wedding music. Bridesmaids included Miss Marion Meyer and Miss Lorna Humphreys was maid of honor. Best man was Arthur Wilcox of Melita. Ushers included Rev Maurice Peele and others. The couple plan to reside in Manitou after a short trip.

Submerged Tractor Brought To Surface After Ice Incident

Great Falls reports G Hill recovered a tractor that fell through the ice on December 27 in the Forbay. On January 4 a diver freed it with a bulldozer after two failed attempts. Glen Oakes fell through a hole and nearly disappeared into the water but survived, joking about preferring a hot bath.

Mrs. W. Brendt Completes 15 Years As L.A. Treasurer

The Ladies' Aid of Beausejour Lutheran church held their annual meeting on Friday January 9 electing officers including Mrs August Groehlick president Mrs Gus Meyers secretary and Mrs H Schaffrott treasurer. Rev H Moertelmeyer thanked retiring treasurer Mrs Walter Brendt who served 15 years in the post.

Beausejour High School resumes after the holidays as students settle into the mid term. A mouse damaged the radio grill at the school. Carnival Queen candidates Englet Like and Tocher traveled to Winnipeg for photo sessions with Bonners.

Joe Sparman Wins First Bonspiel Honors

The first Annual Bonspiel produced close finishes with Joe Sparman taking the main event title and H Side finishing second. Consolation winners were T Wood first and Ken McCuaig second as the season’s schedule gets underway and rinks gear up for more thrills and upsets.

Lac du Bonnet School District Annual Meeting Agenda

The Lac du Bonnet School District No 1235 will hold its annual meeting on Thursday January 15 at 8 p m in the school. The session will discuss and accept the financial report and elect one trustee to fill the vacancy created by the expiry of Fred Dufilly s term. The community acknowledges Mr Dufilly for supervising the building project and his untiring efforts.

The All District Ice Classic opens January 31 and February 1 at Lac du Bonnet with nine clubs participating.
