E. H. Lougheed, former Pine Falls resident, named assistant manager at Manitoba Paper Co. Frank Sellers promoted to chief chemist succeeding B. A. Koskinen who leaves after twelve years for Abitibi Power and Paper Co. Rollin Schwinghamer of Port Arthur assumes Sellers duties.
A Stag party at J T Carey’s home on January 7 honored B A Koskinen with about 24 guests. Carey gave Koskinen a leather briefcase as refreshments and lunch were served. Koskinen has worked twelve years as chief chemist for Manitoba Paper Co Ltd and is moving to Abitibi Power and Paper Co in Sault Ste Marie Ontario.
On January fifth the Whitemouth Consolidated School students found travel to and from school more comfortable as a heated bus replaced horse vans. The school board sanctioned and organized the route with George Henderson holding the contract.
A community event sponsored by the Association of Commercial Travellers and CJOB will broadcast from Beausejour on February 7 featuring local talent. Contestants submit applications to J. Abramson at Drache Matlin and Abramson Beausejour. Proceeds support anti tuberculosis drive.
Bern Drysdale, the youngest skip, and his four teammates won the Novelty Bonspiel Grand Aggregate, defeating Claude Shields rink in a tight final. Doc Lippman’s Eager Beavers captured Consolation honors. regular curling began Jan 5 with record membership. A rink telephone was installed in rink 79.
Beausejour Board of Trade adopted a 1948 plan focusing on highways upgrades including widening the Trans-Canada Highway and linking roads, plus tourist development and industrial opportunities. Committees were named for Highways, Industrial Development, Tourism, and Publicity with aim to boost traffic, promotion, and local payroll industries. Members urged local participation through memberships to advance the program.
The Rural Municipality of Brokenhead holds its first 1948 meeting on January 6 with Reeve F Small and councillors present. Storsley is named chair of finance and Storsley to supervise bridge repair. An order for forty drainage culverts is placed for the year.
At the January 6 1948 council meeting Thomas Harrison was sworn in as reeve with T G Erskine as secretary pro tem. The council organized with George Rerick deputy reeve Edmund Large finance chairman and George Erskine timber inspector and sanitary officer. A delegation of fifty Ward 1 rate payers requested secession from Whitmouth R M and the council decided to seek the Municipal Commissioner's views before action.
In the inauguration of the Village of Lac du Bonnet on January 6, Mayor K C Fergusson of Great Falls welcomed the new mayor and councillors and wished a prosperous year. The village, Manitoba’s easternmost incorporated community, aims for growth with Mayor Sparman and councillors Brown Arsenault and Mikleichuk guided by secretary W Halliday.
Town council held its first meeting in Beausejour on January 6 and named chairs for five committees. E Kaatz will head the finance committee, F H Ehinger the streets and public works, A P Wilgosh the electric department, and H Fenning the health and municipal aid committee. On January 3, 1923 the Great Falls power plant began operation at 2.13 o'clock. Saturday January 3 1948 celebrated its twenty fifth anniversary with ceremonies and local acknowledgment.
Remaining league games listed with Beausejour as a host venue. matches include Seven Sisters, White Mouth, Pine Falls, Great Falls, and Lac du Bonnet from January 11 to February 1 with Beausejour hosting multiple dates.
Tickets on sale for the Board of Trade 1948 Ice Carnival and Dance with voting rights for Carnival Queen. Candidates include Betty Englet High School Hannah Litke Public School Iris Tocher Cloverleaf school. Carnival date is February 18 featuring sports events and prizes. Profits go to the War Memorial.

Ray Blomquist eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Axle Blomquist Lac du Bonnet married Blanch Ross of Norquay on Sunday January 6 in Norquay Sask. Axle recounts journey obstacles including impassable drifts requiring shoveling and snow loading for traction before returning to Manitoba highways.
Great Falls reports G Hill pulled a tractor from Forbay ice on January 4 after two failed tries. A diver retrieved the bulldozer still attached, and Glen Oakes almost vanished through a submerged hole in the ice. He later joked about preferring a hot bath.
The Ladies Aid of Beausejour Lutheran Church held their annual meeting on Friday January 9. Officers elected included Mrs. August Groehlick president Mrs. Gus Meyers secretary and Mrs. H Schaffrott treasurer. Rev H Moertelmeyer offered thanks to retiring treasurer Mrs Walter Brendt who had served fifteen years.
Beausejour High School returns after holidays to a busy term with three Carnival Queen candidates Betty Englet Hannah Like and Iris Tocher traveling to Winnipeg with chaperones A B Bonner for portraits. Students sell Ice Carnival tickets as Ukrainian Christmas empty seats noted.
The first Bonspiel crowned Joe Sparman as champion with runner up H. Side. Consolation winners were T. Wood on first and Ken McCuaig on second. As the season begins, rinks gear up for more thrills and upsets in upcoming events.
The Lac du Bonnet School District No. 1235 will hold its annual meeting on Thursday January 15 at 8 p.m. in the school. The agenda includes approving the financial report and electing one trustee to fill the vacancy from Fred Dufilly's expired term. The community thanks Mr Dufilly for supervising the school building project.
The third annual North Eastern Manitoba Bonspiel begins Saturday January 31 and ends Sunday February 1 at Lac du Bonnet. Nine district clubs are notified by mail and optimism runs high per K R McCuaig secretary treasurer. The Grand Challenge Springfield Leader Trophy was last won by Fred King’s Seven Sisters Falls team.
Beausejour hosted Seven Sisters in a fast paced Sunday tilt that featured a standout scoring spree by Beausejour in the second period. Key goals came from Art Budnar Eddie Englet Mickey McMaster and Weldon Ridley to pull away late, with Richter L itke and Hobson guiding Seven Sisters. The final tally gave Beausejour an 11 to 8 victory in a high energy battle.
Beausejour defeated Whitemouth 9-2 on Whitemouth ice Sunday January 4. Beausejour opened with a 4-0 lead in the first period as Weldon Ridley Art Budnar Fred Litke and Eugene Ferens scored with assists to Rewacki and Litke. Whitemouth goalie Dave Cousins faced heavy shot volume as the visitors tallied nine goals.
Students return from holidays as names join the year at the Winnipeg visit in Barbara Rassmussen thanks. high school bonspiel curling team won two of four as Boxing Day skating party with moccasin dance ends at Community Rink with refreshments provided by Art Rassmussen and a fond thanks for his help.
