Army discharge and staff transfers noted locally

Falls residents welcomed visitors from Winnipeg and Toronto during the holiday season. Edna McCreary of Winnipeg joined E Outhwaite and family, while C Bigelow and son Barry from Winnipeg stayed with C Precious. L ieutenant L McNee and Grace McNee from Saskatoon and Toronto respectively visited G M Ambrose family, with other relatives hosting New Year’s Day gatherings and several students returning to colleges after holidays.

Professor Cragg of United College officiated at the Sunday School and service in memory of P O Clifford Ridge, shot down last March, with A S Williams speaking of Cliff. Miss M Stevens of Winnipeg visited the Burbidges for New Year holidays. Mrs E Peterson of Lac du Bonnet visited the Brownells for a few days. Mr and Mrs T E Storey and son Tommy of Winnipeg visited the Rosen family during New Year holidays. Mr and Mrs Neily and daughter Marjorie of Tyndall also visited the Rosen household.

Modern British Methods Eradicated Medieval Plague

London reports that McAuley Gracey, head of Infestation Control at the Ministry of Food, led a successful campaign against bubonic plague in Taranto Italy. He used British plague vaccine poisons and DDT dusting for mass rat control and plans to assist pest control efforts in Germany.

New Year Social Events Highlight Community Gatherings

The district marked New Year with a community hall dance in the evening, music by recordings overseen by Penny Mars and Steve Melnick, and a large turnout. Guests included Mrs. F Oxholm, Mr. and Mrs. Chapman of Brandon with Miss Jean Ridge, and Winnipeg visitors Joy Craig, Dorothy Jenner, Gwen Richer. Mr. and Mrs. A S Williams travelled to Winnipeg with Mrs. Eadie. Freddie's homecoming from hospital is welcomed. Olga Ridge and Ruth Tittlemier returned to Toronto after the holidays.

Winnipeg area notes share holidays and return from Bonspiel

The report records visits by Miss Neily RN and Mrs Fryer of Winnipeg to relatives in Winnipeg and at Orne House. R.C.A.S.C. driver R B Lodge and Pte Ketola arrived home aboard the Queen Elizabeth and were welcomed in Pointe du Bois. The High School Boys Bonspiel squad returned from Winnipeg with enthusiasm and new experience as they look forward to future events. A New Year dance at the Community Hall ushered in 1946 with well wishes and greetings after the midnight gong.

Holland plans six whaling ships and factory ship

The Netherlands will buy six UK whaling vessels and a Swedish tanker to convert into a factory ship. A government backed company with about £1,100,000 capital will operate the fleet. The move aims to make Holland self supporting in fats, save foreign exchange, and create many jobs.
