World Wheat Crop Updates and Drought Breaks

The Italian wheat crop is officially estimated at 4.7 million short tons and Argentina's crop at 165,734,000 bushels in the first official estimate, both above last year but well below average. The U.S.A. has seeded 51,940,000 acres to winter wheat, up 3.6 percent from 1944. European conditions are generally favorable for winter wheat, while South Africa reports a disappointing harvest and Portugal shows a broken drought.

Pinawa Christmas Concert and Community News

A Pinawa hall concert on December 20 presented by school children under Mrs. R Moen concluded with a Santa Claus song. Santa distributed apples and candy to each child. Bill Allestad arrived home from overseas aboard the Mauretania, visiting Winnipeg before returning home. Local visitors and a Christmas party honored servicemen, with gifts from the Great Falls War Auxiliary. The Red Cross donation of 79.12 was acknowledged, and many community members traveled to Winnipeg for holidays. A school concert December 21 featured Santa and a silver collection for the Junior Red Cross. New homes near completion welcome families, and residents returned for Christmas break.

Famous Flyers Join 1 C A Staff In War Aviation Era

Two former high ranking R C A F officers join Trans Canada Air Lines as special duties heads to bolster expanding domestic and trans ocean flights. Group Captain G R McGregor O B E D F C and Group Captain E H G Moncrieff O B E A F C bring extensive wartime service, with McGregor decorated three times and held commands in Digby, Alaska, Patricia Bay, and 126 Wing.

Winnipeg air officer Moncrieff’s wartime service career

Wing Commander Moncrieff, born in Winnipeg and educated at St John’s College and Ridley College, served across Canada and Britain from 1933. He earned the Air Force Cross for work at No 12 SFTS Brandon and led an army co operation squadron at Surrey before joining fighter reconnaissance units. He was mentioned in despatches in 1940 and 1941 and repatriated to Canada in September.
