Parochial and grade schools in Spring Valley conducted a drill under Assistant State Fire Marshal Wm. Faletti. Average evacuation time was 36 seconds with orderly exits and no distractions. The High School emptied in 19 seconds with 260 students. additions exits were recommended.
Hall's Lyceum Course under the Senior class drew strong sales and opening receipts. Proceeds exceed cost go to the senior memorial fund with a future gift planned for the school. The Gypsy Serenaders pleased the audience as a life sized Abraham Lincoln portrait joined the school art collection. Walnut defeated Hall’s lightweight team 6 to 0 on Wednesday with more games planned.
A six reel photo play titled Satan's Scheme will be shown at the Methodist church Sunday evening October 14. The educational biblical drama features scripture truths thrilling scenes and inspiring light. Admission is free with a silver offering.
The owners petitioned the Council to widen the Spalding Erie pavement and pave Spalding from Erie to Dakota, two blocks. They asked permission to install ornamental lights and remove poles by the corner of the new building. The Council granted lighting and pole removal but delayed paving action.

William Gunther and a hospital sister suffered facial burns from ammonia when a valve released in the hospital ice plant. The ammonia sprayed the wall and rebounded to their faces. both wore glasses, eyes unharmed. Injuries described as painful but not serious, and both freed to go out.
City Clerk Nelson H. Smith has received word from Washington that he was granted a patent for a collapsible tourist and camping stove. The sheet metal miniature stove with pipe is strong and durable and, when erected, can bear a man’s weight. It folds into a compact package and occupies little space as Smith plans immediate manufacture.
Fanti Fanti a 22 year old Ladd resident died when he slipped from a steel pole and fell across a 33 000 volt line near the Illinois Light and Power powerhouse in La Salle He was employed by a construction crew building a new sub station The coroner jury ruled accidental death and his body was taken to a La Salle morgue then to his family home in Ladd for funeral arrangements
A three act comedy titled Duley will be staged at Hall featuring an all star cast. The bride named Smith plays a weekend party to help her husband and friends. The ensemble includes a lunatic an ex convict and a scenario writer. The show promises frequent laughter and marks the year’s first play.
The Benld Wildcats travel to Benld on October 28 as downstate opponents promise a tough test. Dom Audi and Arthur Balzarine reported from La Salle that Benld should not fear the Cats, while a large group of supporters plans to back the team with cash. If Beard wins the game will be noted as a hard battle.
Circuit Court heard John De Shot of Sheffield tried for burglary at Auto Inn garage owned by Grover Smith and Wm Fisher. A jury returned a compromise verdict convicting him of petty larceny. Other cases listed include Murray burglary larceny Thornton embezzlement and more with several attorneys named.
Interurban plans to introduce one man cars on the Illinois Valley division between Princeton and Joliet next spring. General manager F. E. Fisher says the change will not affect sixty current trainmen and will double service intervals on Joliet to Princeton and Ottawa to Streator. The move aims to curb automobile competition as lighter cars are built, with work to cover the full 107 miles of track. A winter schedule with changes was put into effect Sunday.
The Frank Rambo Department store in La Moille was raided Tuesday night with about 1200 dollars in merchandise stolen. Robbers entered through a rear window and removed silk pieces, silk taffeta, crepe de chine, suitcases, and large quantities of hose, all dumped from boxes into suitcases. This marks the fourth robbery at the store, with a neighbor noting an auto leaving town around 1 30 A M.
A state engineer announced in Peru that survey work will begin next week on the proposed state highway route between Peru and Mendota. Bids for the Peru Mendoza link may be sought this winter with construction set to start when weather allows.
Namie Faoiz aged 72 a prominent Syrian merchant died suddenly of heart disease while awaiting a train at Cherry depot en route to Granville for a relative's funeral. Coroner’s inquest affirmed heart failure. Survived by wife son and daughter. Funeral held at St George Syrian Orthodox Cathedral Spring Valley.
Princeton City Council passes an ordinance regulating alms soliciting requiring a mayoral permit. The mayor states the aim is to block imposters while not hindering legitimate local churches and religious groups. Blanket permits will be issued to churches and local institutions based on public support.
Miss Gertrude Schulte of La Salle married Louis A. Ream of Peru in a 5:15 mass at St. Patrick’s church La Salle. The ceremony included Miss Marguerite Schulte as bridesmaid and Frank Ream as groomsman with the bride given in marriage by her father Fred W. Schulte.
Conductor Sam Ritzenthaler was held up at Buda Monday night about 7 15. He had closed a switch after Burlington train No 1 departed west bound. Two young men threatened him with a gun and took his watch and a small amount of money before fleeing toward the station.
Residents report a harmless night prowler peering into windows and hiding in yards over three weeks. A West Dakota street resident is suspected, with fears his actions may end abruptly if he continues.
Mrs. Thos. Cotton a Coal Hollow and Seatonville resident died at home after a weeklong illness following a long decline in health. Born in Dudley England she came to Coal Hollow as a youth and later ran a hotel in Seatonville. She was 74 and survived by five children four sisters and one brother with funeral services held at Seatonville Congregational church.
Armistice Day is marked as Goats Doig Day with a double header at Hicks Park. The La Salle Independents headline a card vs Tri City Wild Cats with 75 cent admission and advance tickets in nearby towns. Proceeds go to defend Goats Doig against unjust charges after his World War service and boxing record.
Thomas Cantwell 51 oldest motor man on the Chicago Ottawa and Peoria railway died at St. Margarets hospital Spring Valley after a gall stone operation. He had been ill two weeks with a relapse after a brief improvement. Born in La Salle he lived there most of his life. Survived by a widow and two brothers Michael Wheaton and James Chicago.
The Avell Athletic Club of Chicago offered no real opposition as the Wild Cats dominated at Hicks Park last Sunday. A 26 to 0 final score featured Baima and Walker strong on ground plays, Coveny to Sitterly for a TD, and Lolli breaking for 50 yards. Next Sunday the Cats face the Rock Island Navahos at Hicks Park in a highly anticipated clash.
Miss Lulu Gordon of the Yellowstone Inn north of La Salle was bound over for assault and battery on a $100 peace bond after a hearing on a warrant. Bethel Robinson, who had similar charges by Gordon, was also bound over on a comparable bond. The dispute stems from competing ownership claims of the inn.
Hall Township High School opened its football season with a 6 to 0 victory over Mendota. Dwyer blocked a punt on the Hall five yard line and Franckey scored in the second quarter. Mendota controlled the ball in the third but could not score. Hall showed strength but incurred heavy penalties and three ejections for roughness. Hall next travels to Ottawa for a key match.
Rev. Chas. Bowen, longtime pastor of the Spring Valley Methodist church, resigns after three years to accept a post in Wisconsin. Rev. Lawrence Elliott is appointed by the Methodist conference to succeed him.
The local Ford agent Ed Coveny reports demand exceeds supply as factory shipments lag. Coups and sedans are highly sought before cold weather, with Ford cars and tractors averaging about twenty sold per month since Coveny took over the agency.
