A Congregational Sunday School drive gathers gifts and food for impoverished families. Last year forty baskets were distributed with no one overlooked. Donations come from individuals and lodges, with a list of homes to be aided this Christmas. Special services will be held in all churches on Christmas Day.
The American Nickeloid Co. of Peru will open a Walnut Port Pennsylvania branch about February. Building cost about 25000 and machinery around 15000. The Peru plant employs about seventy. half live in Spring Valley. The firm codes copper brass zinc and tin plating and ribbons zinc. intends to supply eastern markets with nearer production. R F Struever led the building contract and will oversee installation. Peru office remains main, boosting local and eastern operations.
Standard wins 1–0 over Dalzell on Standard grounds in a fierce local clash overshadowed by rivalry and bets. Joe Panier scored the deciding goal after Dalzell mounted a second half rally. Dalzell had speedy players and a strong back field. Standard benefited from Parson stars and two Mark players. A rematch is planned at Dalzell on December 30 with James Wilson refereeing.
No mail delivery on Christmas Day for local and rural routes. The notice urges early mailing and package dispatches to ensure timely arrivals.
Mrs Lottie Halm of La Salle files a divorce suit against Henry Halm in La Salle county Circuit Court. She alleges wilful desertion and loss of credit from grocer and butcher. A separate maintenance action and temporary injunction protect her property and children. The couple wed June 25 1913 and separated December 9 of the current year. Mrs Halm was formerly Lottie Stuart of Spring Valley.
The China Shop enjoyed a large audience last Friday night. Presented by the school's music department under Miss Osmanson the comedy drew loud applause for its humor and lively musical numbers.
Deputies Applen Conkling and Hopkins conducted raids at Spring Valley locations and a Seatonville home. They found moonshine wine and mash at multiple sites including Elmer King s saloon and William Russell s residence, with a still reportedly hidden. Liquor was transported to the county jail.
Mek-Kah Temple D. O. O. K. of Peru elected officers for the coming year. Two Spring Valley men James Dwyer and Andrew Johnson were chosen as officers. A smoker and refreshments followed the meeting which was well attended.
Frank Farrington president of the Illinois Mine Workers will resume his duties January 1 at his headquarters after an operation at Mayo Bros hospital in Rochester Minnesota. The operation was entirely successful, it was announced.
Hall Town High School beat Princeton 14 to 6 at the local gym last Saturday. The Hall Town squad used speed to outplay the visitors throughout the contest.
Frank Cletus Dickerson aged three from the C. H. Girvin farm south of Buda drowned after falling into a three foot water tank covered by thin ice. Parents searched for about an hour before the sweater and body were recovered. a doctor aided but could not revive him.
Hall Township High School hosts a sewing exhibit in Room 206 on Thursday night December 20 from 7 30 to 9 30 and Friday 8 30 am to 3 10 pm. Beginning and advanced classes showcase wardrobe garments plus hats undergarments dresses and some Christmas gifts. Students contribute at least one item each while the manual training shop displays festive toys for Santa. Parents and the community are invited to attend.
Reverend Mother of Sisters of Mercy of St. Xavier's Convent Ottawa died Tuesday at 12:30 in Mercy hospital Davenport after months of treatment. Her passing brings grief to the Ottawa community, the academy students, and the nuns who revered her.
Miss Harriet Patterson and her brother Harry Patterson of Peoria survived a 75 foot plunge from a precipice near La Salle while en route to Ottawa and Streator. They escaped with minor injuries and were to leave La Salle hospital soon.
Dr Paul J Secrest transfers Spring Valley practice to Dr Norman H Lynn and opens a new dental office in Chicago south of Jackson Park near Lake Michigan. Secrest, US Public Health Service dental examiner, departs Spring Valley for the move after a long local career and a series of travels for study and recreation. His wife Grace Creed remains in the area as they establish residence near the lake.
Sheriff Mills received a call from Mayor of Wyanet and rushed with Deputies Conklin and Applen. They recovered a battered Ford and five intoxicated men, plus two pints of moonshine. The workers at De Pue were too drunk to identify themselves and face disorderly conduct and prohibition charges.
Ottawa towns ship High School coach Richard Newberg died Tuesday after a sudden diabetes coma. He officiated a game Sunday and coached Monday, collapsing at 4 39 PM in the gym lavatory. he died at 9 10 AM Tuesday after insulin treatment failed. He would have turned 25 that day, a grim birthday tragedy for the community.
Henry Maurer of La Salle sustained several serious cuts after his Ford coupe struck a loose horse on the Hollowayville De Pue highway. The collision smashed the car lights door and windshield with flying glass causing facial wounds requiring five stitches.
Two men identified in connection with the Ohio State Bank robbery of 1300 on October 24 are in custody in Illinois. Ensore is jailed in Paxton on related daylight holdups. Smith was captured in Joliet after a high speed chase and is held in Champaign. Police found 645000 in bonds checks and cash in their car, with bonds from De Kalb and payroll checks from Champaign company. They face penitentiary terms in central Illinois before possible return for Ohio case.
Petrona Seplis a 38 year old Lithuanian native living on West First Street died Sunday after a week of pneumonia. She leaves four children Joseph Della Edward and Michael. the eldest works in Chicago and others are 8 to 12. Her husband died last year. Funeral services were held at St Anne’s Church with burial in the Lithuanian cemetery after a Moose lodge connection and Mooseheart care for the children.
Morals Inspector Stevens led a secret raid with Deputies Applen Simpson and Aldrich to seize punch boards, slot machines, and other games of chance. The Camp restaurant was entered. two slot machines were confiscated and the proprietor summoned to Princeton court. Stevens, claiming reform, cites moving picture show work and warns officials he will expand his reformation effort.
