Perry County job training program slows to start
Perry County officials face slow progress as surveys sent to about 375 local businesses yield fewer than 25 responses. The effort, led by Du Quoin Bank president Michael Travelstead, seeks input on job skills needed and partners with John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale for training. Initial summer start now unlikely due to poor survey return.

State taps potential windfall. Illinois lags behind
Springfield officials in the state's business development agency have done little to promote a Defense Department purchasing program that could aid Southern Illinois and other high unemployment areas. Michael Goetz said he is still gathering details and only recently learned which communities meet jobless criteria. The program lets firms in distressed regions bid with a 5 percent disadvantage and compete for non-weapon military purchases. Illinois entities have supplied 2.3 billion of 127 billion in Defense Dept purchases, about 1.8 percent, with calls to expand outreach to widget making firms.
