Farmers Need Sunshine Between Rains Says Local Extension Agent
Jackson County Extension Service Adviser Jt Frank says rain is welcome but warm dry air is needed to help soybeans and wheat thrive. Farmers report 90 percent of corn planted and 40 to 50 percent of soybeans sown, yet lack of sun risks disease and poor growth as subsoil remains dry in tight clay soils. Weather expert Wayne Wendland notes rainfall about 25 percent below normal over the past 10 months, with surface moisture near normal but subsoil still dry. A drought seminar with climate and water data is set for June 15 at the Roland Lewis Community Center in Mount Vernon, fee $5. contact Loreena Ivens for details.

High schoolers face drug arrest warnings from officials
At Murphysboro City Hall the Sov ern Illinois Enforcement Group released a three month probe finding about 20 high school students across four schools in Union and Jackson counties implicated in drug activity. Nine from Union County and 11 from Jackson County may face criminal prosecution, with seven non students also referred. The operation tracked purchases mostly of marijuana and caffeine pills misrepresented as amphetamines, yielding about 35 dollars per sale on average, with some as high as 130 dollars. The youngest seller was 13, no teachers implicated, and authorities say more prosecutions are expected in two weeks with youths over 17 to be tried as adults.
