Striking workers disrupt Norge plant shipments in Herrin
Preparations to speed appliance shipments by the Herrin Norge plant coincided with intense verbal harassment of striking workers. A court hearing on a company injunction to block traffic to and from the plant was moved up to this afternoon. Union officials said they were told to appear, with prior rulings denying a temporary restraining order. Trucks entered and left the plant under picket lines as state police escorted some routes. Police presence varied between days, while union leaders urged peaceful picketing and cited employee distrust of the company.

Compromise leaves room for big cuts in budgeting
Washington AP President Reagan gains much from a 695.4 billion spending target that skirts Social Security cuts but allows deep spending and tax cuts. The plan envisions a 1984 surplus and relies on future unidentified cuts, while omitting Social Security changes and prompting criticism over optimistic growth and high interest rate assumptions.
