A four story North Side apartment building fire killed 19 people and injured about a dozen as it raced from basement to the roof. Investigators traced the blaze to a first floor laundry room and noted many smoke detectors were nonfunctional or lacked batteries.
Survivors recount a pre-dawn blaze in a four story Uptown building as lights failed and smoke filled halls causing panic. Nineteen people died and a dozen were injured as residents crowded windows and sought exits, with firefighters rescuing many from balconies or windows. Police and fire officials described extensive smoke, a laundry room start, a collapsed stairwell, and swift, chaotic evacuation efforts.
