Soviet plan for synthetic fuels drawn from coal
The Soviet Union announced a synthetic fuels strategy to convert coal to oil, testing in small pilot plants while private US programs face subsidy cuts. Brezhnev disclosed the plan at the 1981 85 five year plan congress, aiming to ease oil dependency with Kansk Achinsk lignite in Siberia and pilot capacity at Novomoskovsk by 1983.
