Carterville Plans Community Center at Cannon Park
Mayor Bill Mansey leads Carterville’s push to build a community center at Cannon Park with capacity for 300 plus. Estimated at 500000 to 800000, the city has raised 200000 as a grant from Springfield is expected to double the amount. A golf scramble on Sept 14 at Crab Orchard Golf Course aims to raise extra funds, with a hole in one prize of a new car or truck and cash. The facility will include four to six partitionable rooms a kitchen restrooms and storage. Police Chief Orion Drew credits Mansey and organizes the scramble. The plan mirrors Herrin’s civic center and seeks annual fundraising for upkeep. Many local businesses are contributing to the project.
