A federal appeals court held that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is unconstitutional because of the words under God, a ruling that could affect nine Western states. The case by Michael A. Newdow from Sacramento challenges the pledge in Elk Grove schools.
Amtrak and the Bush administration reported excellent progress in resolving a 200 million dollar shortfall with a tentative plan to prevent service disruption. A state audit found the Du Quoin State Fair did not receive more than 10522 dollars owed by vendors on time for the 2000 and 2001 fairs. Several contracts had late or missing payment dates and state law requires formal due dates.
