Carter Forces Kennedy Backers on Democratic Platform
After a week of bargaining the Democratic Platform Committee adopted a 40000 word platform aligning with Carter on major issues. It rejects most Kennedy aims such as extra job spending, price controls, welfare expansion, a health plan timetable, and draft reform, while endorsing tax cuts, inflation fight, and expanded jobs. The platform backs national health goals with no timetable, supports abortion rights, Social Security protections, welfare reform toward a guaranteed minimum, deregulated trucking with mass transit aid, equal rights for women, affirmative action, civil rights including sexual orientation protections, and limits on handguns while backing MX missiles and SALT. It also pledges phasing out state welfare shares as revenues permit and retiring nuclear power when alternatives are ready.
