Herrin Cable Rate Hike Likely Despite Veto

Herrin residents face higher cable costs as the council approved a 26 percent rate increase but Mayor Mario Ottolini vetoed it. City Attorney says the veto is unresolved while Cablevision plans to follow the council’s original decision. The basic rate would rise from 6.30 to 7.95 dollars with higher installation fees, prompting concerns over fairness for fixed incomes. Aldermen warn the city could lose 4000 to 8000 dollars in revenue if the rise is blocked, yet Johnston City and West Frankfort subscribers may face service cuts if their councils reject the increase. Cablevision district manager Dick Thomas later said West Frankfort and Johnston City will see service reductions only as a necessary economic measure.
